High school pitching has been a bit down around the nation compared to last spring, with the country’s earned-run average swelling from 5.03 in 2024 to a current mark of 5.55.
That trend wasn’t apparent this last week in Colorado, though.
Below are some of the best pitching performances over the last seven days in Class 5A and 4A.
Class 5A
Grandview’s Ethan Wachsmann: The Wake Forest commit followed up his worst outing of the season with a no-hitter against Cherokee Trail on Saturday.
In his seven innings for the CHSAA 5A No. 2 Wolves (11-3), he struck out nine and walked three in the 2-0 win. It was Wachsmann’s second complete-game performance of the season, with the first coming in an 11-strikeout, 7-1 win over Fruita Monument last month.
The no-no flushed his rough start from 10 days ago, when he allowed four runs in three innings in a 9-7 loss to No. 1 Castle View.
Cooper Vais, Arvada West: Vais extended his scoreless streak on the mound to 12 innings for No. 4 Arvada West (10-2-1), allowing just one hit in six innings in a 5-0 win over Bear Creek on Tuesday.
The sophomore has a 0.25 ERA in 28 innings this season. The lone earned run credited to him was on March 10 in a 5-5 tie against Cherry Creek.
Gabriel Grandy, Castle View: Grandy threw a five-inning, one-hitter in an 11-0 win over ThunderRidge on Monday. It was his third straight win on the mound for the No. 1 Sabercats (12-2).
Grandy’s ERA is a miniscule 0.34 over 20 1/3 innings this season.
Brayden Bay, Poudre: The senior struck out 11 over seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 win over Roosevelt on Wednesday.
It was Bay’s first complete-game win since the start of last season, when he twirled a 12-strikeout, one-hitter against Denver East. It brought his 2025 ERA down to 4.64 across 31 2/3 innings for the No. 31 Impalas (7-5).
Sawyer Tipton, Mountain Vista: He allowed just two hits and struck out 10 in a 2-0 win over Fort Collins last Thursday.
No. 6 Mountain Vista (8-5) has been one of the hottest teams in the state as it’s won five straight over the past 10 days.
Parker Aaron, Horizon: The senior tossed a three-hitter in a 9-0 win over Denver North on Monday.
Prior to it, Aaron had never thrown a complete-game with the Hawks (4-7).
Class 4A
Aaron Jaquez and Brayden Millikan, Falcon: The two juniors combined to throw a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over Pueblo Central on Tuesday.
Jaquez improved to 3-0 on the year, throwing four innings, striking out five and walking three. Millikan fanned three and walked one in three innings of relief.
Since losing to No. 2 Pueblo County at the start of the month, No. 3 Falcon (8-3-1) has outscored its last five opponents 60-6.
Tyson Hagen, Longmont: He allowed one unearned run across seven innings as No. 25 Longmont tamed one of the better offenses in the classification, Mead, in a 5-1 win.
He scattered three hits, striking out 10 while walking one.
Blake Swift, Pueblo County: Allowing just two hits and one unearned run, Swift pitched Pueblo County (14-2) past Pueblo Centennial, 12-1, on Saturday.
Swift hasn’t allowed an earned run over his last 18 innings. His ERA is 0.49 over 28 1/3 this season.
Grant Kerber, Windsor: He threw a five-inning, one-hitter in a 15-0 win over Loveland a week ago.
The ace is 3-0 with a 0.59 ERA for No. 8 Windsor (11-3).
Zack Young, Centaurus: In two complete-game wins this month, Young has allowed just one earned run while fanning 27.
A week ago, he punched out 14 as the No. 29 Warriors (7-8) beat No. 33 Niwot, 4-1.
Andrew Torres, Discovery Canyon: The senior struck out 11 as No. 12 Discovery Canyon (9-2) beat No. 5 Air Academy 15-1 in five innings.
Torres is 4-0 with 48 strikeouts over 25 2/3 innings for the Thunder this season.
