The top end of the Class 4A football rankings are going to see a shakeup next week. The top two teams in the classification both fell on Friday night with No. 1 Palmer Ridge falling 31-28 to Mesa Ridge and Broomfield got shut down by rival Erie 13-3.

Those were the big stories in what became an unpredictable slate of football games for Week 5 of the high school season.

The 5A results went pretty much as expected but chaos reigned supreme in the 4A and 3A games.

Mesa Ridge’s win over Palmer Ridge came on the result of a late touchdown pass from Bryce Riehl to Zander Iwanski with 3:28 remaining in the game. That score capped a furious fourth quarter rally where the Grizzlies scored 19 straight points to take the lead. The defense came up with a couple of big plays late in the game as Chris Hinojosa came up with two interceptions in the fourth quarter.

Grand Junction suffered its first loss of the season as Durango put up some solid offense and kept Tigers quarterback Will Applegate in check to come away with the 38-7 win. This was the first game between these two programs in 11 years. Durango won the previous meeting 34-33 in October of 2013.

Roosevelt, the No. 1 3A team in the Colorado Preps football rankings, fell to No. 5 Windsor 34-10 and Pueblo East scored in bunches to beat No. 3 Holy Family 63-42.

Summit even got in on the upset action as the Tigers scored late to secure a 22-21 win over No. 10 Steamboat Springs.

This has been the most volatile week of the season thus far and is likely to result in a pretty significant shakeup of the rankings.

Bell still rings blue

The historic rivalry Bell Game between Pueblo Central and Pueblo Centennial was never really much of a contest. The Wildcats pushed the Bulldogs around from the start, taking a 29-0 lead before the first quarter was even over.

This is the sixth consecutive win in the Bell Game for the Wildcats and the fourth in a row where they’ve held Centennial scoreless.
