If the pitching in the Class 5A and 4A baseball tournaments are anything like they were in last weekend’s regional tournaments, it’s going to be a tough go for offenses over the final two weeks of the spring season.
In different regional championship games across 5A, Broomfield’s Maverick Scarpella threw a 12-stikeout, no-hitter against Cherokee Trail. Cherry Creek’s Wyatt Rudden one-hit Denver North, fanning 11, while Fossil Ridge’s Brek Benedict and Vedant Sharma combined for a one-hit shutout of their own, beating Arapahoe.
In 4A, Pueblo County’s Blake Swift threw a seven-inning shutout in his regional championship win over Roosevelt, striking out nine. Golden’s Sawyer Brinkman, meanwhile, tossed five more spotless innings across both regional games, pushing his scoreless streak to 15 innings.
Let’s take a look at the eight-team, double elimination tournaments in 5A and 4A, focusing on the pitching that could decide the state crowns.
Class 5A
No. 1 Grandview (21-4) v. No. 8 Castle View (19-6) at 9:30 a.m. at All-Star Park
Grandview’s Ethan Wachsmann, committed to Wake Forest, has a 1.96 ERA in 39 1/3 innings this spring.
Against Castle View on April 2, Wachsmann had one of his worst outings of the season, allowing four runs across three innings in a 9-7 loss.
A start later, he couldn’t have been much more brilliant, tossing a nine-strikeout, no-hitter against Cherokee Trail.
Senior Gabriel Grandy leads Castle View with an ERA of 1.70 in 33 innings this spring. He did not pitch in the team’s regional tournament, however.
No. 4 Fossil Ridge (20-5) v. No. 5 Broomfield (22-3) at 12 p.m. at All-Star Park
In a battle between the highest scoring offenses in the class, pitching may end up being the difference.
Broomfield’s Maverick Scarpella is 7-0 with a 1.58 ERA in 44 1/3 innings this spring, while teammate and BYU commit Ethan Zufall is 7-1 with a 1.81 ERA in 38 2/3.
Fossil Ridge, meanwhile, is led by Brek Benedict (2.82 ERA in 44 2/3 innings) and Vedant Sharma (3.00 ERA in 39 2/3 IP).
No. 2 Cherry Creek (19-5-1) v. No. 7 Rocky Mountain (20-5) at 9:30 a.m. at All-City Field
The Bruins won their ninth baseball title in program history last year, which is the most by any Class 5A school in the state. Rocky Mountain is tied with Broomfield for second, each having six.
Going for more, Cherry Creek’s Connor Larkin is arguably the state’s best player with a .450 batting average to go along with 35 RBIs and 10 home runs. And he can pitch, too, touting a 2.21 ERA in 19 innings this season.
Rocky Mountain’s ace is senior Ross Frank, who is 10-1 with a 1.08 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 65 innings. In the Lobos’ regional championship, he went seven innings, allowing one unearned run while striking out eight in a 3-1 win over Prairie View.
No. 3 Arvada West (22-2-1) v. No. 6 Regis Jesuit (18-7) at 12 p.m. at All-City Field
Arvada West has a lethal one-two punch on the mound in sophomore Cooper Vais (0.96 ERA in 51 IP) and junior Brayden Reiner (1.67 ERA in 46 IP), who are a combined 15-0 this spring.
Regis Jesuit is led by junior Hudson Alpert, who is 5-3 with a 1.27 ERA in 44 innings. In his team’s regional championship, he struck out 13, allowing one run in seven innings in a 2-1 win over Mountain Vista.
Class 4A
No. 1 Pueblo County (23-2) v. No. 8 Severance (19-6) at 9:30 a.m. at Air Force Academy
Blake Swift has a 0.38 ERA in 55 1/3 innings for Pueblo County. He’s allowed just one earned run across his past 45 innings.
Severance’s Brady Iversen has a 3.69 ERA in 43 2/3.
In March, Pueblo County beat Severance 10-5, though neither Swift or Iversen pitched.
No. 4 Windsor (19-6) v. No. 5 Palisade (17-8) at 12 p.m. at Air Force Academy
Wyatt Gustafson is 8-1 for Windsor, with a 0.90 ERA in 46 2/3 innings. In his team’s regional championship game win against Grand Junction, he allowed two unearned runs in seven innings.
Palisade is led by junior Danyel Ishida-Farmer, who owns a 3.15 ERA in 33 1/3 innings. In regionals, he threw five scoreless innings in a win over Canon City.
No. 2 Falcon (19-3-1) v. No. 7 Durango (15-8) at 9:30 a.m. at UCCS
After allowing just one hit across seven innings in his previous two appearances on the mound, Parker Cordova (4-0, 2-02 ERA in 34 2/3 IP) settled for a no-decision in a 5-4 regional championship win over Mead, allowing three runs in six innings, striking out 10.
Durango’s Dawson McInnes bounced back from his worst outing of the season — allowing eight runs in 1 1/3 innings in an 11-0 loss to Palisade — pitching a scoreless 2 2/3 frames in a 15-12 regional opening-round win over Summit.
No. 3 Golden (22-3) v. No. 6 Cheyenne Mountain (16-7-1) at 12 p.m. at UCCS
Golden’s Sawyer Brinkman is 9-0 with a 0.93 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 60 innings this spring. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 15 innings, which included a three-inning, no-hitter in a 15-0 regional win over Longmont.
Cheyenne Mountain’s Charlie Scofield is 6-3 with a 4.70 ERA in 44 2/3 innings.
