The top seed in the current Class 6A girls basketball rankings has No. 1 Grandview  and No. 2 Valor Christian separated by a mere .02 points.

The race to be their postseason’s No. 1 seed will be interesting over the final weeks of the regular season — which ends on Feb. 22 for 6A and 5A on Feb. 22, and March 1 for 4A.

In 6A, top-ranked Grandview and No. 2 Valor Christian have combined to win the last four big-school championships and six of the last seven. The Eagles won the title last year and in 2021, while the Wolves went back-to-back in both 2022 and ’23 and ’17 and ‘18.

In this week’s look-in on 6A-4A girls hoops, we’ll dive into those races for the top spot in the postseason.

Class 6A

Current top five in CHSAA rankings: Grandview, Valor Christian, Highlands Ranch, Broomfield and Pine Creek.

The Wolves (14-3) have won eight straight since their three-point loss to Valor Christian on Jan. 4. That game featured the past two 6A players of the year in VC’s Quinn VanSickle and Grandview’s Sienna Betts, as well as VC’s Peyton Jones, who has made a strong case to contend for the award this year, averaging 25.3 points and 3.9 steals per game.

Since then, Valor Christian has won 10 in a row and still hasn’t lost to a team in Colorado this winter.

Up to this point, though, Grandview’s strength of schedule has been the difference in the rankings.

Below those two teams, No. 3 Highlands Ranch (15-2) has won six straight since dropping back-to-back games against No. 18 Ralston Valley and No. 6 Cherry Creek earlier in the month. Freshman Kimora Banks-Thomas had 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting in the Falcons’ 81-24 win over Ponderosa on Friday.

No. 4 Broomfield (16-1), meanwhile, has won seven in a row since its lone defeat of the season — a 79-62 loss to Valor Christian on Jan. 11.

No. 5 Pine Creek (15-2) isn’t far behind. Its only two losses of the season came to 4A No. 1 Air Academy and Highlands Ranch earlier this month.

Class 5A

Current top five: Air Academy, Mead, Green Mountain, Mullen and Windsor.

The Kadets (17-0) maintained a strong lead atop the ranking with wins over No. 10 Palmer Ridge and No. 14 Lutheran over the past week.

Led by Tatyonna Brown, who has been one of the best players in the classification, averaging 19.7 points on 60% shooting and 8.2 rebounds per game, Air Academy is five wins from notching a perfect regular season. It finished 22-1 in last winter’s regular season.

Mead (16-2) is No. 2. The Mavericks, allowing just 36.9 points per game, can make things interesting with AA if they win out and beat 6A No. 4 Broomfield on Feb. 18.

Currently, Mead has six players averaging at least 1.3 steals per game, led by Caroline Kron’s 2.6. And it has three players averaging at least 10 PPG, with sophomore Madi Clark out front at 13.7 PPG.

Outside of Air Academy and Mead, No. 4 Mullen probably has the next best chance of landing the No. 1 seed, and that’s due to the fact it plays in the 6A/5A Centennial League. The Mustangs (11-6) face 6A No. 6 Cherry Creek and No. 9 Cherokee Trail over the next eight days.

Green Mountain (17-2), at No. 3, is lurking. It has won 16 straight behind Kantyn Pearson’s 13.8 PPG. The junior had 24 points in a 79-27 win over Evergreen on Saturday.

No. 5 Windsor (13-4) is on a win streak of eight. Reyleigh Hess (16.3 PPG) has been at the forefront, scoring at least 15 points in 10 of her last 11 games.

Class 4A

Current top five: University, D’Evelyn, Timnath, Pagosa Springs and Eaton.

University (14-0) and D’Evelyn (17-0) are both undefeated. The No. 1 seed will be decided by their respective tests down the stretch.

The top-ranked Bulldogs, led by Janay Kravig’s 10.4 PPG, is at No. 5 Eaton on Feb. 12, No. 12 Sterling Feb. 14 and No. 6 Holy Family Feb. 24. On Jan. 23, they beat the Reds (10-5) by 13.

The Jaguars can cut into the University’s lead with home wins against 5A No. 14 Golden and No. 3 Green Mountain this week. So far this winter, they’ve gotten a standout season from sophomore Colleen Monahan (16.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG).

Timnath (13-2) is just behind them, currently No. 3. It could make things interesting with wins over 5A No. 6 Roosevelt and 4A No. 13 Berthoud later this month.

Pagosa Springs (12-4), at No. 4, is on a seven-game winning streak. It had big wins against 4A No. 8 Alamosa and 3A No. 2 Centauri during it. And this month, it will face each of them one more time.
