There’s still plenty of season yet to be played but there’s plenty of moving and shaking in Class 3A, 2A and 1A boys basketball.

This week some more unpacking should happen with some key games on the schedule.

COUGARS ARE ROARING: The winds of change in Class 3A are blowing with the top teams in the rankings. Resurrection Christian is trying to claim the top spot by week’s end and the Cougars put themselves in this position thanks to a 59-42 decision over previously unbeaten Windsor Charter Academy (13-1).

The big win ran RC’s record to 13-0. Senior Ty Yoder is scoring a team-best 18.3 ppg and he doesn’t work alone. His teammates – senior Graham Riggs (14.1 ppg) and junior Egan Koenig (13.2 ppg) are also scoring in double figures.

RC has a key set of games coming up against Heritage Christian (9-3), Jan. 30, followed by clashes with Forge Christian (10-4) on Feb. 1 and Brush (7-7) on Feb. 4.

BULLDOGS ON THE PROWL: Don’t sleep on the Byers Bulldogs in Class 2A. The Bulldogs are sporting an 11-2 record and are slowing sneaking up near the top of the rankings.

Since losing to perennial state power Simla (10-2) 58-47 on Jan. 10, Byers has rattled off four consecutive wins. Up next for Byers is a home game against Arickaree (8-4) on Jan. 30 and Burlington (2-6) Feb. 1.

Junior Quincy Eacret (13.6 ppg) and sophomore James Maes (10.4 ppg) are leading the way for Byers.

PRIMERO POWER: The Primero Bulldogs are putting themselves in the Class 1A state championship conversation.

Primero is 12-1 overall following its 74-51 victory over Walsenburg on Monday. In that game, seniors Mat Pachorek (29 points) and Brett Kendall (21 points) led the way. Kendall is averaging a team-best 19.2 ppg this season, followed by Pachorek (16.8 ppg). Primero has won nine games in a row, following a 53-36 loss to Cotopaxi on Dec. 12.

Up next for Primero is a home game against La Veta (5-6) at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Here is a sampling of some other big games this week.

Class 3A

Strasburg (11-2) at Liberty Common (9-4), at 7 p.m., Friday

Strasburg is definitely a top team in Class 3A. After two tough losses to Windsor Charter Academy (77-55), and Resurrection Christian (67-51). The Indians bounced back with a 68-40 victory over Brush on Tuesday.

Now, they will try and keep things going when they take on Liberty Common. Tyce Bollers (18.9 ppg) and Nick Glatfelter (13.9 ppg) are pacing Strasburg.

Liberty Common will counter with Pierce Richardson (17.9 ppg), Caiden Castillo (13.7 ppg) and Grayson Clay (12.5 ppg). After losing four games in a row, Liberty Common has responded with three consecutive games – the latest a 72-66 victory over Wiggins on Tuesday.

Class 2A

Dawson School (5-6) at Golden View Classical Academy (11-3), 7 p.m., Thursday

The Golden View Classical Academy Sentinels are making some noise in the Class 2A ranks.

The Sentinels are in a groove – winning five consecutive games. The latest win was a 70-34 decision over Addenbrooke Classical Academy on Wednesday. The victory improved GVCA’s record to 11-3 overall.

The top scorers for the Sentinels are Luke Chronowski (14.5 ppg) and Jacob Walker (13.7 ppg).

GVCA will try and keep things rolling it entertains the Dawson School. The Dawson School is paced by Milo Richtel (13.5 ppg) and Isaiah Tu (12.3 ppg). The Mustangs are riding a two-game winning streak.

Class 1A

Elbert (6-4) at Evangel Christian Academy (7-4), 8:30 p.m., Friday

Since losing to Denver Christian (61-42) on Jan. 13, Elbert has been on a hot streak – winning four games in a row. The most recent was a 42-30 over Hanover on Jan. 25. In that game, Ethan Tesman scored a team-high seven points. Tesman (14.7 ppg), Caleb Cornell (14.3 ppg) and Eli Cornell (11.5 ppg).

ECA is coming off a 63-54 victory over Las Animas on Tuesday. The Eagles are led offensively by Brock Jones (20.9 ppg) and Boaz Galliart (15.5 ppg).
