DENVER — The last two days at Foothills Golf Course were unbearably cold, wet and just flat out miserable; and while everyone else was cold and suffering on Tuesday, Timnath’s CheyAnne Schrick was simply on fire.
The Cubs junior successfully defended her Class 3A title, doing so in impressive fashion with a second day 7-under par 65 — a two day total of 142 — to win by nine shots over her freshman teammate and Day 1 leader Peyton Landon.
It was an impressive show by Timnath, which also had freshman Isla Carlucci finish tied for third. The Cubs best defending team champion Holy Family by 28 shots.
“We really came to play. My two freshmen, Peyton and Isla, they’re great players and they do so well under pressure and we were just confident out there,” said Schrick, whose team and Holy Family were all square on strokes through the two tournaments they had played together this year. “We knew we could do it, so I think the fact e had that cushion after yesterday, just propelled us today.”
Schrick’s heater of a day started on the second hole. She hopped aboard the birdie train and rode it for five straight holes, bookending it by taking advantage of the two short par 5’s on the outward nine.
“That set me up pretty well,” Schrick said. “I just felt really comfortable. I love the course, it’s a great course and I was just comfortable and confident and I think that really helped.”
Schrick, who took the lead after three holes, parred the final three holes of her front nine and then proceeded to make two more birdies on Nos. 10 and 11. Perhaps the best moment of her round came at the par-4 12th, where she blocked her drive right — almost into the hazard — chipped out and then put her third to within 6 feet and calmly rolled in the par putt.
A three-putt bogey on the next hole was her only hiccup of the day.
“Coming into today I was two down, which is the same as it was last year. So I think just that mentality of I know I can come back from this, that really put me in a good spot today,” said Schrick, who bested her career low by two shots on Tuesday. “Then throughout the year, just preparing for this moment and doing a couple of practice runs here really helped.”
In addition the three Timnath girls at the top of the leaderboard, Littleton’s Zoe Bar-Or and Holy Family’s Dannika Nielsen rounded out the top five.
