One way or another, this weekend’s Class 5A/4A City League tournament will have its thumbprint on the final few spots in the 5A postseason.
With five days remaining in the regular season, the league touts three teams on the edge of making the 32-team regional tournament in No. 29 Vista PEAK Prep, No. 32 Denver North and No. 34 Denver South.
Over the last week, Vista PEAK (11-9) and North (11-10) got on the right side of the bubble thanks to respective wins streaks of four and three.
South, on the other hand, looking to end a postseason drought that dates back 2019, has skidded just out of it after losses to No. 41 Monarch and 4A No. 12 Discovery Canyon.
In our final look-in on 5A and 4A baseball before Tuesday’s final day of the regular season, let’s take a look at the bubble teams vying to make their respective regional tournaments, which are scheduled for May 16-17.
Class 5A
Bubble teams: No. 29 Vista PEAK Prep (11-9), No. 30 Highlands Ranch (9-12), No. 31 Rock Canyon (8-12), No. 32 Denver North (11-10), No. 33 Poudre (9-10), No. 34 Denver South (12-8).
Vista PEAK Prep is in good shape to make its first postseason trip as a varsity program, while league-mates Denver North and South will likely have to do more at this weekend’s City League tournament to punch its regional ticket.
Vista PEAK and North are scheduled to play Friday, with North’s infielder John Miller and Vista pitcher Abel Salinas among possible headliners.
Miller is hitting .440 with 19 RBIs this season, while Salinas is 4-3 in 43 1/3 innings pitched with a 3.55 ERA and 62 strikeouts.
South, meanwhile, is at No. 14 Northfield. The Ravens are led by sophomore Johnny Komarowsky, who is hitting .397 with 24 RBIs.
Out of the 5A/4A Continental League, Highlands Ranch and Rock Canyon are both currently in the projected field, sitting at 30 and 31. But both have work to do.
For now, the No. 30 Falcons, led by an offense hitting .307 this spring, have the slight edge over the No. 31 Jaguars in the 5A standings thanks to their 3-2 win over them late last month.
But to stay in the field, Highlands Ranch may need to win both of its final two games — at No. 48 ThunderRidge on Friday and home against No. 36 Boulder on Monday.
Rock Canyon, on the other hand, would feel better about its chances if it can take at least one of its final two, with a home game against No. 21 Douglas County later on Thursday followed by a road game against No. 20 Fairview on Saturday.
The first team out, No. 33 Poudre, has four games remaining to change that, including two against No. 28 Fort Collins.
Last Friday, senior Benny Quast helped keep the Impalas in postseason contention with five RBIs in a four-inning win over 4A No. 62 Northridge. He’s driven in a team-most 15 this season.
Class 4A
Bubble teams: No. 29 Green Mountain (12-7-1), No. 30 Longmont (9-11), No. 31 Widefield (13-7), No. 32 Niwot (7-12), No. 33 Rifle (9-11), No. 34 Dakota Ridge (9-11).
Longmont and Niwot, both out of the 4A/3A Granite Peaks League, may have found their footing just in time to stay in the 32-team field.
The No. 30 Trojans snapped a six-game losing streak on Saturday, beating No. 14 Northfield, 4-3, behind four strong innings of relief from Robbie Sekich. The junior pitcher saw a three-run lead dwindle to one in the seventh before he struck out the side.
The Cougars, meanwhile, lost their last seven games of April but have started May 2-0. Senior Jagger Kilpatrick had three hits and four RBIs in a 13-3 win over No. 38 Frederick last Thursday, then pitched six innings to get the win in an 11-5 victory over No. 43 Thompson Valley on Friday.
Between them in the rankings, No. 31 Widefield is on a seven-game winning streak and is tied atop the 4A/3A Colorado Springs Metro League South with No. 25 Canon City at 7-1. Junior Nick Prantl has a hit in 16 of 18 games this season, touting a .571 average to go along with 25 RBIs for the Gladiators.
The first two teams out, as of now, are Rifle and Dakota Ridge.
The No. 33 Bears have lost eight of nine after starting the season 8-3. They are scheduled to end the season with three games at home — two against No. 36 Battle Mountain on Saturday before concluding with No. 49 Grand Junction Central on Monday.
The 34th-ranked Eagles had won four straight before Saturday’s 11-9 loss No. 40 Standley Lake. They still have a chance to break into the field with three games to go, however, with a possible season-defining win awaiting at No. 4 Golden on Saturday.
