The Christmas break is over, and it is back to action for the teams in Class 3A, 2A and 1A boys basketball.
It has been an eventful season so far, but things are getting ready to kick into gear as schools chase state championship glory.
OLATHE’S GORDON SHINING BRIGHT: Yes, it is very early in the season, but Olathe’s Isaiah Gordon is turning heads.
The junior is averaging 29 ppg and grabbing 4.4 rebounds and dishing out 3.1 assists for his 3A team.
Gordon has helped lead Olathe to a 5-3 overall record. Only senior Cole Scherer of Valor Christian is averaging more points than Gordon at 30.8 ppg.
Olathe is coming off two wins over Soroco (78-17, Dec. 20) and West Grand (61-31, Dec. 21). In those games Gordon poured in 23 points and 27 points, respectively.
Gordon will try and keep things rolling when the Pirates entertain Gunnison (3-4) at 4:30 p.m., Saturday and then travel to face Cedaredge (1-5) at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 14.
PLATEAU VALLEY’S VIG PLAYING BIG: In 2A, Jack Vig is leading the way for Plateau Valley (6-1). Vig is scoring 15.7 ppg. After losing their opening game to Fort Lupton (55-47) on Dec. 5, the Cowboys have won six games in a row and now they have to try and stay sharp against De Beque (Jan. 10), and Hayden (Jan. 11).
Vig, a 6-foot-5, 185-pounder, is also snaring near 10 rebounds and 5 assists an outing. A year ago, Vig averaged a career-best 16.8 ppg.
EWING STEERING FLATIRONS ACADEMY TO TOP: The Bison are one of the top teams in Class 1A, thanks to Brandon Ewing. The senior guard is scoring 15.6 ppg.
Ewing and the Bison – after losing to Arickaree (64-54, Dec. 14) – bounced back to defeat Evangel Christian Academy (54-48, Dec. 20) in their last game before Christmas break.
Up next for Ewing and his mates is a clash with Belleview Christian (2-4) at home at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 10.
