After years and years of losing, the boys soccer program at Longmont High School is suddenly among the top teams in the state.

The CHSAA Class 4A No. 4 Trojans are off to a 6-0 start this fall, their best record to start a season in more than 16 years.

It comes just a year after the program erased seven straight losing seasons with a 9-6-1 record and just three years since their winless 2021 campaign.

“We’re all working together,” said Longmont senior Zander Salva, who was a freshman when the Trojans went 0-14-1. “We all believe.”

In this week’s look-in on boys soccer, let’s dive into a few of the most surprising starts from teams across the state.

Class 5A

Monarch: The Coyotes (3-1) have had just two winning seasons since 2016, but they’re off to a good start this fall.

George Behringer had a hat trick against Poudre earlier this month before Monarch’s win streak came to an end in a 2-1 loss to Prairie View on Friday.

The 5A No. 23 Coyotes will be tested this week with road games against MaxPreps’ No. 1 team in Colorado, Boulder, on Tuesday, then 4A No. 7 Silver Creek on Thursday.

Monarch finished 5-9-1 last year.

Chatfield: The 5A No. 28 Chargers (4-1-1) haven’t had a winning season since the pandemic season, when they went 6-3.

This fall, they won three straight — beating Brighton, Green Mountain and D’Evelyn — before falling to Castle View. They then responded with a 3-2 win over Eaglecrest last week.

Last year, the Chargers finished 5-7-3.

Class 4A

Longmont: The Trojans (6-0), three years removed from a winless 2021 season, are CHSAA’s 4A No. 4-ranked team.

How about that?

Over their last four wins they’ve outscored teams 17-0, which included a 2-0 win over Erie last week that featured a shutout performance from fill-in goalie Tegan O’Brien. Newbie Noah Chavarria, strictly a club player before this season, leads the offense with seven goals and three assists.

Greeley Central: The 4A No. 16 Wildcats (3-1-1) are in search of their first winning season 2019.

Their lone loss through their first five games came to 5A Fort Collins late last month. Last week, they beat Windsor 1-0 behind Cristian Garcia De La Cruz’s second career goal.

Last year, the Wildcats finished 6-7-2.

Class 3A

Pueblo Central: The Wildcats (4-2-1) are a win away from matching their entire win total from the past two seasons.

After going 5-23-2 the past two years, Pueblo Central is having a nice start to its 2024 campaign.

Last week, it beat crosstown-rival Pueblo Centennial for the first time since at least 2009. Before junior Owen Bensko’s seventh goal of the year lifted the Wildcats to victory, the Bulldogs had won the last 26 meetings.

Bayfield: After going winless during the pandemic season, the 3A No. 25 Wolverines (4-2-1) are looking for their third straight winning season.

Last week, they extended their unbeaten streak to three games after drawing with No. 12 Manitou Springs, 3-3.

Class 2A

Rocky Mountain Lutheran: The 2A No. 26 Eagles are 5-1-1 to start the fall, just a year after finishing 1-12-1.

Junior Gavin Borchardt has stopped 34 shots, allowing five goals as part of it. The Eagles’ three-game unbeaten streak came to an end last week in a 7-1 loss to No. 13 Campion Academy.

Speaking of which …

Campion Academy: The Cougars (4-1), who went just 4-5 a year ago, had their four-game win streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to Dawson on Monday.

Before it, they’d outscored their first four opponents 35-3.
