The top five teams from the Continental League advanced out of the opening round of the 6A postseason, including No. 19 Rock Canyon on the road.
The Jaguars upset No. 14 Smoky Hill, 81-67, on the back of 59% shooting. And they’ll face league-rival No. 3 Chaparral in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
When Chaparral and Rock Canyon (13-11) met during the season, the Wolverines (20-4) rallied past them in the fourth quarter to win 70-65.
In this week’s look-in on big-school boys basketball, we’ll dive into a few interesting matchups in Tuesday’s Class 6A and 5A round of 16. Below that, we’ll look at where things stand for the start of the 32-team 4A postseason this weekend.
Class 6A round of 16 (Tuesday)
No. 19 Rock Canyon at No. 3 Chaparral, 6:30 p.m.
The Jaguars won for the fourth time in five games in an opening-round win over Smoky Hill. Sophomore Jacob David (18.3 PPG) had 20 points, while senior Kasen Lehman (19.2) added 18.
When they lost to Chaparral by five on Jan. 24, sophomore Christian Williams had 17 points and seven boards in the win. Lehman had 26 points in the loss.
No. 12 Arapahoe at No. 5 Valor Christian, 7 p.m.
The defending champ Eagles (20-4) extended their win streak to 11 games in a Round 1 win over Denver East, 64-45.
The classification’s leading scorer Cole Scherer (26.4 PPG) and senior teammate Ryan Mandes each had 19 points as Valor Christian dominated despite going just 2-of-13 from deep.
Arapahoe (18-6) beat Doherty by nine behind a career-high 30 points from Miles McMonigle. The 6-foot-4 senior shot 9 of 11 from the field and 6-of-7 from 3-point range.
No. 16 George Washington at No. 1 Rangeview, 7:30 p.m.
The Patriots (15-9) lost twice to Rangeview (24-0) during the regular season. Though in both a nine-point loss in January and a 10-point loss last month, they managed to give the Raiders two of their closest games of their undefeated campaign.
The Raiders beat Cherokee Trail 62-25 in the first round. Senior Kenny Black-Knox (9.6 PPG) led the way with 18 points, finishing 7-of-12 from the field.
Class 5A round of 16 (Tuesday)
No. 28 Mountain View at No. 21 Falcon, TBA
The Falcons (16-8) earned a surprise, second-round home game. This, after they beat No. 12 Eagle Valley, 62-56, and Mountain View (16-9) pulled off the biggest first round upset with a win over No. 5 Discovery Canyon, 51-43.
One of these 20 seeds will make the quarterfinals. The Falcons were led by 22 points from Tyler Cox in Round 1, while the Mountain Lions got 14 from Dylan Garland in their win over the Thunder.
No. 11 Longmont at No. 6 Windsor, 7 p.m.
The Wizards (18-6), who fell in last year’s title game to Mesa Ridge, got off to a nice start this postseason, beating Pueblo East 69-39. Madden Smiley (20.7 PPG) had 20 points and John Backhaus had eight points and 16 boards in the win.
They’ll face a tough defense in Longmont (16-8), which allowed just five points in the fourth quarter of its 41-34, first-round win over Grand Junction.
No. 20 Durango at No. 4 Montrose, 7 p.m.
Montrose (18-6) beat Durango (14-10) twice during the regular season — winning by eight in January and 11 last month as part of play in the 6A/5A Southwestern League.
But the Demons should be flying high after their three-point upset over No. 13 Rampart in the opening round.
Montrose, meanwhile, led by just two in the closing minutes against No. 29 Thornton in Round 1. Up just 39-37, the Red Hawks hit seven free throws in the final minute to hold on.
Class 4A
Top seeds: Kent Denver, Peak to Peak, Aspen, Prospect Ridge Academy and Fort Lupton.
The top-ranked Sun Devils (20-3) are the clear favorites in the class. They’re led by standout Caleb Fay (22.7 PPG), 4A’s top scorer. During the regular season, they beat No. 2 Peak to Peak (21-2) by 42, No. 4 Prospect Ridge (17-6) by 19 and No. 6 Coal Ridge by 44.
The second-ranked Pumas had a case for the top spot before their lopsided loss to the Sun Devils on Feb. 18. Outside of that, they beat No. 3 Aspen (20-3), Prospect Ridge Academy and 5A No. 4 Montrose during what’s been an impressive winter.
Aspen is at No. 3 thanks to 14 straight wins since back-to-back losses to P2P and No. 9 Holy Family at the beginning of 2025. Fort Lupton (19-4) is up to No. 5 on the back of its own 14-game winning streak, while PRA moved is at No. 4 thanks to its closing, six-game winning streak inside the tough 4A/3A Metro League.
Other hosts in the first and second round: Coal Ridge, Sterling and Denver West.
The top eight seeds in the classification are set to host the first and second rounds on Friday and Saturday.
No. 6 Coal Ridge (17-6) finished second in the 4A Western Slope League to Aspen, falling to the Skiers by 10 in December, 12 in January and by four last month.
No. 7 Sterling (15-8) finished second in the Patriot League to No. 15 University.
And No. 8 Denver West (19-4) was runner-up to No. 11 DSST: Green Valley Ranch in the 4A/3A City Basketball League.
The sixth-ranked Titans open against No. 27 Stargate School, with the winner facing either DSST: Green Valley Ranch or No. 22 Jefferson Academy in Round 2. Stargate and JA are both out of the Metro League.
Sterling is joined in its group of four by another Metro League foe in No. 10 Colorado Academy. The Mustangs finished fifth in the league behind Kent Denver, Peak to Peak, Prospect Ridge Academy and 3A No. 8 Forge Christian.
Denver West’s grouping includes No. 9 Holy Family (14-9), which beat No. 3 Aspen by five, DSST: Green Valley Ranch by 26, University by 10 and No. 13 The Classical Academy by 10 during the season.
