The one thing about high school spring sports in Colorado is Mother Nature always seems to want to take centerstage – with snow and rain postponing games. Regardless, the show must go on and baseball is in full swing in the Class 3A, 2A and 1A ranks.
Here’s a sample of some movers and shakers early in the season.
DURAN MAKING IMMEDIATE IMPACT: University is sporting a 5-2 record, and the team is atop the Class 3A RPI rankings.
Usually, veterans are the players who are leading the charge – especially early in the season – but that hasn’t been the story for the Bulldogs.
Freshman Brody Duran is leading the Greeley-based team with a .333 batting average. He also has one double, one triple and five RBIs.
Duran and his mates will try to extend their five-game winning streak when they take on North Fork (3-3) at 9:30 a.m., Friday.
STORK HELPS FUEL DENVER CHRISTIAN ATTACK: There has been no better team in the Class 2A baseball ranks in Colorado than Denver Christian the last two years. The Thunder has won two consecutive state crowns.
Now, DC is making waves again in 2025. The Thunder is sporting a 5-1 record, including coming off a narrow 9-7 win over Prospect Ridge Academy on Wednesday.
A key player for the Thunder is senior Caleb York. York has been a key player the past two years with .429 and .432 batting averages in his sophomore and junior years.
York was in top form against Prospect Ridge going 3-for-3, including a triple with three RBIs. The win was the 13th consecutive home victory for the Thunder.
Up next for York and his teammates is a clash with Rangely (2-2) at 6:30 p.m., Friday and then a doubleheader Saturday with games against Byers (4-3) and Monte Vista (5-2) at 11:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.
BISON BARRELING THROUGH THE COMPETITION: Yes, its super early in the 2025 season, but Flatirons Academy is making a statement. The Bison are sporting a 6-0 record, including a convincing 14-0 victory over Clear Creek (1-2) on Wednesday.
Parker Wilson led the way in the Bison victory collecting three hits and knocking in four runs.
Sophomore Everson Nelson is leading the way at the plate for the Bison with a .692 average. Flatirons Academy will try and keep things rolling when it entertains Caliche (2-5) and Wiley (2-5-1) at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.
