Could there actually be nine better teams than Roosevelt in the Class 5A girls basketball playoffs? History says no but we’ll see.

The Class 6A and 5A playoffs start this week, with first-round games Wednesday and second-round matchups Saturday.

There’s plenty of power among the higher seeds in both brackets, starting with 6A No. 1 Cherokee Trail and 5A No. 1 Lutheran.

But there’s no shortage of contenders in the double-digit seeds, either.

Roosevelt, led by the state’s leading scorer, Kyla Lin Hollier (28.4 points per game), is seeded 10th in 5A.

Riverdale Ridge, featuring the highest-rated prospect in Colorado, Briahanna Crittendon, is 13th in 6A.

Let’s look at a couple of double-digit seeds that could win it all this March in 6A and 5A.

Class 6A

No. 12 Pine Creek
The Eagles’ worst loss of the season came back in early December — a 16-point defeat to No. 5 Northfield. They lost to Oklahoma’s Harrah later that month, then fell to No. 6 Denver East (46-42) and No. 7 Highlands Ranch (58-47) in January, just before running through the Colorado Springs Metro League, outscoring opponents 699-294.

If defense wins championships, the Eagles (19-4) have a shot. They allowed a mere 33 points per game this season.

No. 13 Riverdale Ridge
Crittendon, a University of Texas commit, is the state’s all-time leading scorer with 2,983 points. Averaging 28.3 PPG this winter, she’s led the Ravens (20-3) to 15 straight wins and a clean sweep of the Rocky Mountain League, where they outscored teams 1,092-223 in 12 games.

Class 5A

No. 10 Roosevelt
The Roughriders (16-7) enter the playoffs on an eight-game winning streak, capped by double-digit wins over 4A No. 1 Timnath and 5A No. 11 Thompson Valley.

Lin Hollier, who signed to play next year at Colorado State, helped lead Roosevelt to 5A titles as a freshman and sophomore. Now a senior, she’s playing perhaps the best basketball of her career. Over her last four games, she’s averaging 36 PPG.

No. 18 Mullen
The Mustangs (7-16) have a losing record. But that won’t provide much comfort to anyone else in the bracket.

In part, their record reflects the grind of playing in the 6A/5A Centennial League, which features some of the best 6A teams in the state.

Though they have just seven wins, they’ve beaten No. 7 Mead and No. 10 Roosevelt — both of whom are in their quadrant.

Oh, and they’re the defending champs.

Junior Makenzie Jones dazzled in last year’s state final — 13 points, seven steals, six rebounds and five blocks — and leads the team with 17.2 PPG this season.

Class 4A

In case you missed it: No. 5 Holy Family beat No. 2 University 90-83 in triple overtime on Monday. Gracie Ward had 31 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals in the win. Carly Thorpe had 15 points and 17 rebounds in the loss.

Timnath holds a slim lead over University for the top spot in 4A, which kicks off its postseason next week. Timnath closes the regular season at home against No. 11 Berthoud on Thursday, while University is at Wiggins for a tournament, beginning Wednesday against the host team.
