While six of the eight district tournament brackets in 2A boys’ basketball have concluded, two more wrap up on Sunday and those results will finalize the regional tournament bracket. Before those games are played though, we try to lay out the field in anticipation of the official announcement on Monday.
Six district champions have been crowned in Sanford, Limon, Vail Christian, Holly, Highland and Simla and they’ve earned a top eight seed and the right host a regional tournament next weekend. Joining the group will be Sunday winners between Yuma-Wray in District 2 and Mancos-Dolores in District 3.
Now it’s very dangerous in high school sports to use past results to predict future outcomes but since Yuma and Mancos both have two wins over their opponents from earlier in the season, we’ll give district titles to the Indians and Bluejays so we can lay out our bracket.
With those results, the top eight seeds in the bracket end up in this order.
- Holly
- Yuma
- Highland
- Limon
- Sanford
- Simla
- Mancos
- Vail Christian
23 of the 24 remaining regional tournament berths have been decided. The last one goes to the winner of Ignacio and Telluride as they battle for third place in District 3. Ignacio is favored as they swept two games from the Miners in conference play; but the Bobcats are not an overwhelming choice as the two wins came by a total of five points. Still for our purposes, we’ll place Ignacio in our bracket.
So the order of the remaining 24 qualifiers.
- Fowler
- Byers
- Heritage Christian
- Denver Christian
- Rocky Ford
- Del Norte
- Peyton
- Dayspring Christian
- Sargent
- John Mall
- Akron
- Wray
- Sedgwick County
- Plateau Valley
- Paonia
- Clear Creek
- Ignacio
- Dolores Huerta
- Dolores
- Meeker
- West Grand
- Center
- Thomas MacLaren
- Lyons
The 32-teams would then be placed in the bracket based on the RPI standings. And once regional tournament champions are crowned, the pairings would then be reseeded before the start of the state tournament on March 7th.
