Like all the other previews, this one is a bit early, but that’s the point of a preview. A preview that doesn’t arrive until a date before the event doesn’t give much time to adjust and prepare.
Like the previews that have recently gone before this one, I’ve scored the 3A Girls rankings as if the were results in a state meet. The scored rankings appear immediately below. A short discussion of what the results mean (and don’t mean) shows up at the end of the article.

What we see here is a state meet that appears to be fairly safely in the hands of Liberty Common. But… not so fast, folks. This is a classic example of a state meet preview where you need to know how to read the scored rankings.
We’ll start with Liberty Common because they come out at the top of the pile. With the exception of the SMR8, Liberty Common scores very well in the relays. Maybe too well. We can safely assume that Katie Wrona, Lily Morrison, and Logan Haugestuen are doing a lot of work on at least the sprint relays. Wrona figures in the 100 and pole vault. Morrison figures in the 400. And Haugestuen figures in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Liberty Common has some sprint depth to play with, but not that much.
The absence of Isabel Allori from the top ten of the 800-meter rankings suggests strongly she’ll be running the 4×800, 1600, and 3200 at state. She has decent 800 speed, but her 800 speed is likely worth more points in the 4×800 than the 800. Having said that, I’m not the coach. I don’t get to make those choices.
The Eagles will have to make some calculated choices between individual events and relays for their top individuals. Exactly how much that impacts their relays remains to be seen. But, it’s a reasonable assumption that LC will need an outstanding state meet to pile up the 101 team points shown above.
Coal Ridge isn’t exactly out of the woods on the same score. Peyton Garrison will enter the state meet as a prohibitive favorite to win the 100, 200, and 400. Last year, Garrison tacked on the 4×400 as a fourth event. That choice seems likely again this year and it gives the Titans a little (or a lot) extra firepower in the event that could decide the team title at the end of the day on Friday. But, wherever Garrison’s state meet events fall, there will be consequences for other Coal Ridge events—likely relays.
Coal Ridge, however, is probably a bit deeper in the sprint stable than Liberty Common, meaning they can likely do a better job of filling in the sans-Garrison relays.
Either way, though, it figures to be close. Top-end talent is critical to winning a state meet, and both Liberty Common and Coal Ridge have it.
Holy Family faces a couple of challenges when it comes to translating the rankings into state meet points. One, Skylar Hawk is currently showing for points in five events. One of those events, and the points that go with it, will have to be jettisoned for state. Not only does that cost HF a few points, but it potentially adds to the pile of points for another contender.
To the extent that Hawk figures in Holy Family’s relay qualifying, the relays they run at state figure to be a bit less loaded than the relays they qualified for state with. Bottom line, it’s going to be tough for Holy Family to match the 66 points shown above. Tough, not impossible.
Berthoud and The Classical Academy are the two remaining teams with rather distant state title hopes.
For TCA, there doesn’t figure to be any unloading of relays. And, the Titans hold some reasonable potential to move up a few notches in some relays due to offloading of other teams.
It’s a very similar situation at Berthoud. If Jaycee Williams and Olivia Krueger figure on the Spartans’ 4×400 qualifier, there will either have to be decisions made or it will end up being a very heavy state meet load for the Spartans’ two big guns. I’m taking it as a given that Williams and Krueger will be toting the baton on the 4×800. I could be wrong about that, but I don’t expect to be.
That’s where things stand for now. We still have three weeks for things to shift here and there, but expect that all the serious team contenders for a state title have been introduced.
