The longer a game goes on, the more confidence a lower-seeded team will have. That was certainly the case for the No. 32 Lakewood Tigers.
When regulation ended with Lakewood tied with the Class 5A boys soccer tournament’s No. 1-seeded Legacy Lightning, the Tigers started believing they could pull off the monumental upset.
That belief became a reality and it’s the Tigers advancing to the second round of the state playoffs.

Next up for the Tigers is Liberty, who advanced thanks to a 1-0 win over Rock Canyon. Lakewood and Liberty played back on Aug. 22 and it was the Tigers getting a 4-1 win in that contest.

Lakewood wasn’t the only team to get an upset win in extra time. ThunderRidge kept things even with Pine Creek through regulation before scoring the game-winner in the first overtime period.
Evan Moore and Nolan Munson accounted for the Grizzlies goals in the game and now they’ll head to the second round and travel to Echo Park Stadium to take on No. 11 Legend on Tuesday. The Titans beat Rocky Mountain 3-2.
(12) Fairview 2, (21) Mountain Vista 1
A red card early in the first overtime left Mountain Vista a man down as it tried to pull off an upset over Fairview. But the Knights weren’t having it. Nolan Kelly scored the winner to lead Fairview into the second round where it will face No. 5 Arapahoe.
