What we see in 5A currently is a very tight race at the top between cross-district rivals Grandview and Cherokee Trail. Not much of a surprise there, but teams are known track and field powerhouse programs. We’ll add that the current difference between Grandview at CT is well within the margin of error of an analysis like this.
At this point, probably only Valor Christian is within striking distance. Valor currently doesn’t have a 4×800 in the rankings, suggesting that none of their distance big three will be running the 4×800 at state, assuming the Eagles qualify that relay for state.
Both Grandview and Cherokee Trail are very strong in the relays, but without a large sprint presence. This suggests both of these teams are likely to be able to lock and load their relays for state without worrying about which individual athlete(s) might have to be left off at the state meet.
Consequently, none of the big three figures to have to deal much with issues of slippage from rankings. Some slippage is likely to occur, of course, but probably not because of offloading talent from the relays in favor of individual events.
And, there’s still enough season left for other teams to mount a charge and make a move on the big three. We just don’t see any such moves reflected in the current rankings.
