There are no shortages of Dynamic Duos in the world of sports – Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, and Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig come to mind.
In the ranks of Class 5A, 4A and 3A prep football in Colorado there are plenty of dynamite duos.
A pair that may fly under the radar comes from Coronado High School.
Senior QB Thomas Buckmiller has thrown for 2,098 yards and 24 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Buckmiller’s top target is fellow senior Lyrik Smith, who has caught 39 passes for 879 yards and 9 TDs.
The Cougars improved to 4-2 overall when they beat Pueblo County 10-7 last Friday. They are tied atop the 3A Southern League with a 1-0 record, along with Pueblo East (3-3, 1-0) and Canon City (3-3, 1-0).
Coronado clashes with Canon City at 7 p.m., Friday at Garry Berry Stadium in Colorado Springs.
A win against the stingy Tigers will go a long way in proving how legitimate Coronado is to make a postseason run.
Class 5A
No. 10 Fountain-Fort Carson (6-1) at No. 5 Legend (6-1), 7 p.m., Thursday
This game is worth the watch in 5A. Since losing to Arvada West (34-13 in its season-opener), Fountain-Fort Carson has reeled off six wins in a row, including a 24-17 victory over Regis last week.
The Trojans are fueled by sophomore QB Jaylen Martin (774 yards passing, 9 TDs and 1 interception and 321 yards rushing and five TDs) and junior running back Da’kari Releford (1,126 yards rushing and 16 TDs). Senior Devon Bradford is the team’s top receiver with 19 catches for 364 yards and four TDs.
Legend answers with senior QB DJ Bordeaux (1,513 yards passing, 22 TDs and four interceptions and 469 yards rushing and eight scores) and senior RB Ryken Banks (586 yards rushing and 10 TDs). Junior Kellen Marchand (25 catches and 486 yards and seven TDs).
After losing to Arvada West (35-34 in OT, Sept. 12), Legend has won three games in a row, the last being a 50-7 trouncing of Chaparral last week.
Class 4A
No. 4 Palmer Ridge (7-0) at No. 6 Vista Ridge (6-1), 7 p.m., Friday
Perennial power Palmer Ridge is in the midst of another superb season. The Bears put their talent on display last weekend by muscling past Durango 21-7.
Palmer Ridge has a talented roster paced by senior RB Jackson Mabe (707 yards and 11 TDs), including a TD in the win over Durango. Junior Zak Crisler has added 35 receptions for 559 yards and three TDs.
Vista Ridge, after being blanked by Pueblo West (20-0) on Sept. 26, rebounded with wins over Liberty (42-7) and Rampart (42-7).
The Wolves are led by senior QB Colton Camba (981 yards passing and 11 TDs). RBs Micah Nocita (397 yards, 3 TDs) and Deron Tiggett (361 yards rushing and 5TDs). Aidan Vanaman (29 catches, 319 yards and 3 TDs) is the team’s top receiver.
This game will help shape out who is one of the best teams in Class 4A after this weekend.
Class 3A
Discovery Canyon (5-1) vs. Harrison (1-5), noon, Oct. 18
Seemingly every season, Discovery Canyon proves to be one of the top teams in 3A. That’s the case again this year.
The Thunder, after getting upset by Widefield (31-27, Sept. 25), regrouped and crushed Pueblo Centennial 43-0.
DC is led by a rushing attack that has gained 1,574 yards and 19 TDs. The Thunder’s top rusher is Devon Baker (694 yards rushing and nine TDs).
The Thunder should have its way against Harrison, but upsets are always possible. Harrison’s lone win came against Sierra 37-14 on Sept. 19. The Panthers are coming off a 60-20 loss to Lewis-Palmer last weekend.
Harrison’s top offense threat is QB Jeilo Hamenyimana. The senior has 328 yards passing for three scores and added another 401 yards rushing for five more TDs.
This game should be a good test for the Thunder as they look for a victory and start their postseason push.
