Addison Dorsey and Sophia Lee are shining examples of girls golfers way ahead of the curve in their prep careers. Lee, just a sophomore, has already captured a Colorado high school state title, and the junior Dorsey is considered more than just a contender in the same 2A classification.
It’s perhaps no wonder, then, why the pair felt in their comfort zone this past week while facing off head-to-head against a much older tandem in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball event in Charleston, South Carolina. Lee and Dorsey were pitted against college athletes Kiley Reisner (University of Wyoming) and Summer Schafer (Point Loma), eventually falling 2 & 1 in the match play round of 32 at Daniel Island Club.
The older pair of players were just 1 Up through nine holes before securing another point on the 10th hole. Unfazed, Lee and Dorsey closed out the round with a run of pars to end a solid showing overall.
The pair also made the cut in the stroke play team event, a remarkable accomplishment in its own right, by going 3-under across two rounds.
It’s unclear how many more rounds either will play prior to the Class 2A state championships, which will be held May 18-19 at Lone Tree Golf Club and Hotel. But would it surprise anyone if they are paired up one last time in the final round?
The Big Kahuna
Commonground was still very dry and playable Monday, giving several of south Denver’s best an opportunity to post low scores at an event hosted by Douglas County. Legend’s Maddie Makino fired a 1-under-par 70 to win the event, which also featured four others at 75 or better — Kaylee Meyering (72), Lilie Cohen (74), Scout Fitzgerald (74) and Taylor Wilson (75).
