Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it. Or so they say. History doesn’t always play a factor with high school football teams.
The turnover in rosters, coaching staff and even classifications don’t allow much to be learned from the last time a pair of teams last played, depending on how far back it goes.
But it can still be fun to look at.
With the football playoffs in six of seven classifications beginning this week, here is what happened the most recent time these first-round opponents faced off (in the MaxPreps era).
Class 5A
(9) Castle View vs. (24) Fossil Ridge
The battle of the Sabercats was a thriller in Week 1 of the 2019 season. Castle View got the 28-27 win despite Fossil Ridge running back Chris Bowerfind rushing for 247 yards and three touchdowns. Castle View’s Ezekiel Peirce rushed for 80 yards and two scores to help his team get the win.
(11) Grandview vs. (22) Douglas County
The last time these two teams met was in the 5A playoffs, only the stakes were much higher.
In 2007, the Wolves and Huskies clashed for the 5A state championship at what was then Invesco Field at Mile High. The Wolves got the 20-14 in win in overtime to claim their first – and only – state championship in program history. The two programs haven’t played since.
(12) Rock Canyon vs. (21) Arvada West
Rock Canyon and Arvada West have gone a decade without facing off. They last played on Sept. 5, 2013 with Rock Canyon getting a 14-0 win.
(14) Chatfield vs. (19) Cherokee Trail
The most recent meeting between these two programs came all the way back on Aug. 15. Of this year. The result of the game was a 27-24 win over Chatfield thanks in big part to a Brock Narva performance where he ran for 135 yards and two scores.
However, the Chargers would later realize that they had an ineligible player at the time, and the result now stands as a forfeit win for the Cougars.
(16) Eaglecrest vs. (17) Legacy
The Raptors and Lightning met twice in the 2019 season with Eaglecrest winning both games by a combined six points.
In the playoff game, Max Marsh threw for 242 yards and two scores for the Raptors while Dakota Key rushed for 229 yards and two scores for the Lightning.
Class 4A
(9) Golden vs. (24) Monarch
It has been a decade since the Demons and Coyotes played each other. Monarch was the victor in the last contest, winning 55-0. In fact, in the last four meetings between the two programs, Monarch has outscored Golden 194-21.
(10) Thomas Jefferson vs. (23) Standley Lake
Dimitri Haralambopoulos rushed for 182 yards and four touchdowns back on Sept. 22 of this year when the Spartans beat the Gators 37-7.
(15) Rampart vs. (18) Grand Junction Central
This will be the first game between these programs since Oct. 15, 2005. The Warriors won that game 40-26. The Warriors also beat Rampart 56-7 a year earlier.
(16) Vista Ridge vs. (17) Denver South
The previous meeting between the Wolves and Ravens came in the 2016 4A playoffs. South won 14-0 and surrendered just 97 total yards of offense to the Wolves.
Class 2A
(1) Delta vs. (16) Alamosa
In last year’s state quarterfinals, Konner Workman rushed for 167 yards and two scores to lead the Panthers to a 37-8 win over the Mean Moose.
(2) Kent Denver vs. (15) Eaton
The last meeting between these teams was also in the first round of the 2A playoffs. Back in 2021, Eaton rolled to a 45-6 win. Walker Martin had an efficient day, going 8-for-10 for 138 yards and a touchdown.
(3) Rifle vs. (14) Brush
On Sept. 22 of this year, Logan Gross threw for 142 yards and rushed for 167 to lead the Bears to a 28-14 win over the Beetdiggers.
(5) Elizabeth vs. (12) Moffat County
Moffat County jumped out to an early lead back in Oct. 2021 and it was the Bulldogs getting a 35-21 win over the Cardinals.
(7) La Junta vs. (10) Pagosa Springs
Rylan Schmidt completed just one pass, but rushed for 74 yards and a score as the Tigers beat the Pirates 22-6 back in Week 2 of this year.
(8) Basalt vs. (9) The Classical Academy
These two teams last faced off in a first-round playoff game back in 2019. It was the Longhorns getting a 13-7 win. Basalt would later upset No. 1 Rifle before losing to Delta in the 2A semifinals.
Class 1A
(2) Holyoke vs. (15) Platte Canyon
In the 2012 1A playoffs, Holyoke pulled of the upset as a No. 12 seed, beating No. 5 Platte Canyon 42-20 to advance to the quarterfinals.
(4) Meeker vs. (13) Highland
Meeker and Highland met early in the 2017 season with the Cowboys getting a 40-0 win. They haven’t faced each other since.
(5) Buena Vista vs. (12) Colorado Springs Christian
Buena Vista had to suspend its championships hopes for a season after CSCS got a stunning 21-18 win in last year’s playoffs. Ashton Lofton rushed for 144 yards and two scores for the Lions.
(7) Wray vs. (10) Centauri
Centauri’s march to the 1A state title in the 2021 started with a 28-14 win over Wray in the season opener.
8-man
(1) Mancos vs. (16) Fowler
Back in 2021, these teams faced off in the first round of the 8-man playoffs and the Bluejays cruised to a 59-12 win. Running back Chase Moore rushed for 213 yards and six touchdowns in the win for Mancos.
(4) Lyons vs. (13) Akron
In the shortened fall season during the COVID-19 pandemic, Akron cruised to a 48-14 win over Lyons.
(5) Dove Creek vs. (12) Vail Christian
Like Lyons and Akron, these two programs last met in the shortened 2020 COVID year with Dove Creek getting a 52-20 win. It was the Week 1 game for both programs.
(7) Merino vs. (10) McClave
The Rams and Cardinals met earlier this year with McClave coming away with the 16-8 win. Ethan Bronniman threw for a touchdown and rushed for another to get his team the win.
(8) West Grand vs. (9) Sedgwick County
The last time the Mustangs and Cougars clashed, the 8-man state championship was at stake. Sedgwick County got the 42-6 win.
6-man
(1) Stratton vs. (16) Hanover
Back in September 2019 while playing as a co-op, Stratton/Liberty, blew out Hanover 71-8. The Knighted Eagles played their way to the state title game that season where they lost to Fleming.
(3) Granada vs. (14) Genoa-Hugo
These teams haven’t met since a lot of the current players on each roster were in diapers. Back on Sept. 2, 2005, the Bobcats beat the Pirates 60-14.
(4) Idalia vs. (13) Eads
In a very unusual situation, Idalia and Eads are playing in back-to-back weeks. The Wolves got a decisive 54-24 win over the Eagles. Tarek Glanz threw for four touchdowns to lead his team to the win.
(8) Sierra Grande vs. (9) Arickaree
Arickaree was a still a co-op, playing as Arickaree/Woodlin, in its last showdown with Sierra Grande in 2021. It was the Panthers who got the 46-26 regular season victory in that contest.
