The calendar will flip to May on Friday.
The prep spring season is flying buy, and soon state champions will start being crowned – baseball included.
With that in mind, let’s take a look of how things are playing out in the Class 3A, 2A and 1A ranks.
The CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index looks as follows in 3A: University (17-2); Eaton (15-3); Montezuma-Cortez (12-5); Aspen (14-3); and Prospect Ridge Academy (12-7).
In 2A: Forge Christian (16-2); Monte Vista (19-0); Yuma (12-4); Dayspring Christian Academy (11-4); and Limon (11-5) are the Top 5.
As for 1A: Flatirons Academy (14-3); McClave (18-1); Haxtun (13-6); Akron (13-5); Merino (12-7).
Now, the stretch run is getting ready to take place. It is prime time for teams to be movers and shakers in the Seeding Index and here’s a look at some games that may change some the rankings.
Class 3A
The Classical Academy (12-5) at Elizabeth (13-5), 3:30 p.m., May 5
This is a huge matchup in the 3A ranks. TCA is No. 6 in the Seeding Index, and Elizabeth is No. 7.
The Titans 5-0 in the CSML North League and are riding a four-game winning streak. TCA is paced by Zach Mediavilla (.576 batting average and 21 stolen bases); Chase Rorabaugh (.463) and CJ Mullen (.423).
Of the 20 boys state titles won by TCA none are in baseball. Elizabeth has won eight games in row, the last coming against Mitchell 22-1 on April 23. The Cardinals’ offense is fueled by Brody Aldridge (.527); Cole Robinson (.421) and Cash Buron (.412).
Whichever team loses this game will not have to wait long for redemption. The two teams meet again at 4 p.m., May 7 at TCA in Colorado Springs.
Class 2A
Crowley County (10-6) at Fowler (10-5), 10 a.m. (DH), May 2
In 2A, this is an intriguing battle. Crowley is No. 11 in the Seeding Index and Fowler is No. 14.
Crowley is riding some momentum of late. The Chargers have won three games in a row, including a sweep of No. 9 Las Animas 6-5, and 4-3 on April 25. CC defeated Calhan (9-8) on April 28. CC is led by Derreck Buford (.574); Landon Smith (.434); and Tritt Buhr (.327). Fowler is 6-0 in the Santa Fe League and is coming off a doubleheader sweep of (20-1, and 18-1) on April 24.
The Grizzlies have a 9-1 record in their last 10 games. Fowler’s offense is led by Broc True (.488); Titus Ballard (.421) and Daxton Books (.410).
Class 1A
Wiley (10-9-1) at McClave (18-1), 10 a.m., May 2
In the world of sports anything can happen. That’s what Wiley is hoping for when it squares off against McClave. Wiley No. 10 in the Seeding Index and McClave is No. 2. Wiley is coming off a tight 7-5 win over Holly in nine innings on April 28. Wiley’s top hitters are Devonte Pizarro (.371) and Grant Mauch (.347) and Noah Summers (.333).
McClave is riding a seven-game winning streak, including clubbing Granada (11-0) on April 28. The Cardinals’ top hitters are Ryan Steinbrunn (.603); Oliver Hemphill (.480) and Taylor LeForce (.460).
