Quite the list of teams for best wins in week two as several overtime games were played with coaches making the decision to go for two and the win. We also found a couple of top 10 upsets and watched several teams which have had trouble posting wins of late enjoy the taste of victory.
The list below is compiled before the full week two schedule is complete as two more contests are slated for early next week. Prairie meets Briggsdale in a top-10 six man clash on Monday and West Grand opens their season on Tuesday against Hayden in eight man. Photo provided by Ben Blecha/KPMX Sports.
ROOSEVELT: Ranked #5 in Class 3A, the Riders won a wild game with #1 Mead on Friday; edging the Mavericks 21-20 in overtime. Both teams scored on the first play of their overtime possession but the Riders made their extra point and stuffed the Mavericks two point try. Brig Hartson tossed three TD passes for the second consecutive week; helping the Riders to their 2-0 start.
MONTROSE: The Indians overcame an early 14-0 deficit to stun Fruita Monument 28-27 in double overtime. The game was tied in regulation at 14 and then at 21 following the first extra period. In overtime number two, Montrose scored first with an extra point and the Wildcats matched the TD but failed on their two point try. With both Palmer Ridge and Ponderosa left on the schedule, the win was very important for the Indians as they shoot for another post-season bid. They’re 2-0.
EAGLECREST: Another game that went down to a late two-point conversion but the Raptors were successful in their bid. Trailing Grandview 42-35 late in the fourth quarter, the Raptors drove the length of the field and scored a touchdown in the final 30 seconds. Right there, they went for the win and earned it with a successful two point conversion. The Raptors are now 2-0 and have scored 105 points in those wins.
HAXTUN: Following a frustrating 48-44 loss to Holly in week one, the Bulldogs bounced back in a big way as they upset #3 Dayspring Christian 38-36. The win keeps the Bulldogs right in the middle of the eight man playoff chase but they have little time to celebrate with five-time defending state champion Sedgwick County next on the schedule. Michael Gerk had four TDs on the night; Owen Knode ran for two and threw for a third.
WALSH: A returning playoff team, the Eagles fell to Mountain Valley in their season opener but roared back with an impressive 16-12 win over #10 Kim/Branson. The victory keeps them in consideration for a playoff spot in the six-man ranks and the Eagles have another important contest this week against Cheraw.
LUTHERAN: A big statement from the Lions in week two. They entered the rankings at #10 following an opening win over Lewis Palmer and will continue that climb after blitzing #4 Discovery Canyon 57-17 on Friday. A quick start was the difference. Clayton Jacobs threw TD passes to Jack Whitaker and Colton Thewes while Dorian Pacheco and Ryan Jenny both ran for scores in building a 28-0 first quarter lead. Lutheran is now 2-0 and a strong playoff candidate with a big game against Holy Family looming down the road.
CANON CITY: This one didn’t gain a ton of press statewide but the Tigers rallied from a 12-0 hole to post a 21-18 decision over tradition rich Pueblo East. The win improved the Tigers to 2-0 as they also remain a strong factor in the 3A playoff chase. Dylan O’Rourke ran for two scores and Blake Martin added 10 tackles to lead the Tigers. Canon City is within one win of matching last year’s win total (3-7) and should get there this coming week against Niwot (0-2).
STERLING: The defending 2A state champs are 2-0 out of the gate but getting there hasn’t been easy. They survived for a 14-10 decision over Eaton as the defense forced three turnovers. For Sterling, it was their 16th straight win over an in-state opponent. Their last loss to a Colorado opponent came in October 2018 against Platte Valley (31-28) and they face the Broncos in a very important game for both clubs coming up this Friday.
BROOMFIELD: The Eagles chalked up a quality win over Monarch in week one and added a second against Brighton on Friday (30-21). Those wins continue to keep Broomfield right in the middle of the 4A playoff chase. Cole Lacrue finished with 208 yards and three TD’s passing with two going to Josh Dunn. Dunn caught three passes overall for 165 yards.
LONGMONT: It was only week two but the Thursday matchup of the Trojans and Monarch may have served as an elimination game for the 4A playoff picture. Both teams entered the game 0-1 and needed a win to avoid an 0-2 start. The Trojans came out on top 47-30; taking control of the game with 14 unanswered points in the third quarter. QB Keegan Patterson completed 34 of 38 passes for 442 yards and three TD’s. Caleb Johnson caught 14 passes for 215 yards and a score. Next up for Longmont is a very important rivalry game with #10 Skyline.
CHEYENNE WELLS: A top 10 battle inside the six man division went to the Tigers as they outscored Hi Plains 66-38 on Saturday. The Tigers compete in the rugged East conference where three of the five teams are now 2-0. Evan Worley scored five touchdowns on offense and added a sixth on defense when he returned a fumble five yards for a score. Next up for the Tigers is a very important game with Kit Carson.
GILPIN COUNTY: Their trip to Springfield was only scheduled 24 hours before game time but the Eagles made the long drive worth it with a 44-20 win over the Longhorns. Both teams had their regularly scheduled games for week two postponed late Friday but got together to play this one; basically at the last minute. The win balances Gilpin’s record at 1-1. Defensively, Gilpin held Springfield off the scoreboard in the second half while Stephen King and Blake Boulter did most of the damage offensively.
DOVE CREEK: With Sanford and Mancos in the same conference, the Bulldogs don’t get a lot of press but they picked up a quality road win at Sargent on Friday (41-12). They also beat Vail Christian in week one so both victories this year are against returning playoff clubs. Kade Hankins got the scoring started with a 65-yard fumble return for touchdown and then Gage Bailey added two touchdown runs in the third quarter to open it up.
NOTES: Week two was a good three-day stretch for many clubs who have had trouble putting wins on the scoreboard. Lyons had just one combined win over the last two years but picked up their first in 2020 by downing Denver Christian 52-8 on Thursday. Weldon Valley had lost 15 straight games but snapped that streak by beating Otis 67-33. It was also the first head coaching win for Greg Edson. Cheraw moved to 2-0 by slamming Cotopaxi 46-0. The Wolverines have not experienced a winning record since 2015 with one win seasons three of the last four years. Palmer is 1-1 after edging Coronado 26-24. Coming into 2020, the Terrors had posted just three wins in the past four years combined. Cedaredge (2-0) matched their win total of 2019 with a narrow 14-12 decision over Olathe. Valley gained their first win for head coach Scott Leffler in an exciting 31-25 victory over D’Evelyn. The Vikings (2-0) seek their first winning record since 2016. Riverdale Ridge also collected their first win as a 3A program. It took some work to get there as they outlasted Niwot 14-7 in overtime.
