A good mix of league and non-league contests on the boys’ basketball schedule for Tuesday night.  Conference games deal with teams trying to reach the top of the standings, win the title and grab an automatic playoff berth.  Non-conference games listed are important for teams trying to get into the postseason as an at-large club.

Three top 10 pairings are found in the big school ranks between #3 Rangeview-#5 Chaparral, #4 ThunderRidge-#9 Denver East and #10 Chatfield against 4A #8 Erie.  League positioning games of note include Peyton-Colorado Springs School, Brush-Strasburg, Fort Lupton-Englewood, Lewis Palmer-Liberty and Doherty-Fountain Fort Carson.

With the last two weeks of the regular season upon us, Colorado Preps is altering coverage a bit.  We normally preview the top matchups with this story but instead will wait for results to come in tonight and then update what those results.  Stay with us throughout the night as we work through the scores and set the stage for important contests ahead.

CLASS 1A

FINAL:  #3 Cheraw beat Eads 45-36

FINAL:  #5 Merino beat Wiggins 66-49

#8 Caprock Academy at Plateau Valley

FINAL:  Hi Plains beat McClave 46-41

FINAL:  Del Norte beat Sangre De Cristo 52-42

FINAL:  Cheyenne Wells beat Kit Carson 50-40

GAME NOTES:  Another hard fought win for Cheraw inside the High Plains but it keeps them alone atop the standings.  The Wolverines are 10-0 on the season and inside the conference; lead Cheyenne Wells and Granada by one game.  They’ve beaten Cheyenne Wells but wait until March 5th to host Granada.   The Tigers and Bobcats collide on Friday.  Cheyenne Wells built momentum for that contest by beating Kit Carson this evening.  Hi Plains picked up a crucial non-league win over McClave.  The Patriots are 37th in RPI to start the night so any win can help their playoff chances.  They also remain in the chase for the YWKC championship and could get an automatic bid there.

CLASS 2A

FINAL:  #2 Wray beat Burlington 74-46

FINAL:  #3 Peyton beat Colorado Springs School 73-30

FNAL:  #7 Mancos beat Montezuma Cortez 74-66

FINAL:  Moffat County beat #9 Meeker 59-50 (OT)

FINAL:  #10 Ignacio beat Dolores 40-31

Monte Vista at Center (PPD due to quarantine)

GAME NOTES:  As they’ve done to most opponents this year, Wray made quick work of Burlington on their way to the 28 point win.  The Eagles stayed unbeaten on the season and have two more games this week; they meet Holyoke on Friday and then tangle with top ranked Limon on Saturday.  Ignacio survived a slow down effort by Dolores but still beat the Bears 40-31.  The Bobcats remain tied with 1A Dove Creek for the San Juan lead.  Curious to see how the loss to 3A Moffat County impacts the RPI standings for Meeker.  They were 8th going into the game and would receive a first round bye in the playoffs if they started today.  24 teams make the postseason in Class 2A with the top eight seeds getting a bye into the round of 16.  Peyton’s run-away win over CSS gives the Panthers the Black Forest championship and confidence entering an attractive matchup with #2 Yuma on Saturday.

CLASS 3A

FINAL:  #3 Manitou Springs beat Lamar 71-33

FINAL:  #10 Coal Ridge beat Delta 55-45

FINAL:  Englewood beat Fort Lupton 57-51

FINAL:  Strasburg beat Brush 67-58 (OT)

Arrupe Jesuit at DSST-Montview

GAME NOTES:  Englewood won the first battle of Colorado league unbeatens on Tuesday.  They improve to 3-0 in league play and continue to share the lead with Aurora Central.  Fort Lupton suffered their first conference loss (2-1) and now falls one game off the lead.  Aurora Central also bumped to 3-0 with 72-48 decision at home over Weld Central.  Coal Ridge maintains top billing in the Western Slope thanks to the win over Delta.  The win puts them at 5-0 in league play and still one game up on Basalt and Aspen.  A little bit of a shakeup in the Patriot standings with Strasburg’s overtime win at home against Brush.  The Indians rallied from nine down in the fourth quarter.  The result left both clubs with two league losses so they now share the third spot.  Resurrection Christian (6-1) is alone in second by one game to Sterling.  Those two teams meet later in the week.  Manitou had little trouble with Lamar and that win keeps them tied for the Tri Peaks lead with top ranked St Mary’s.

CLASS 4A

FINAL:  #5 Lewis Palmer beat Liberty 75-58

FINAL:  #6 Montrose beat Grand Junction 56-32

FINAL:  #9 Steamboat Springs beat Summit 58-47

FINAL:  Thompson Valley beat Severance 55-41

FINAL:  Frederick beat Riverdale Ridge 45-42

GAME NOTES:  Montrose continues to roll through the Southwestern league as they pushed their record to 5-0.  The win over Grand Junction also keeps the Indians two games up in the league chase.  Thompson Valley won the first-place battle with Severance and now is alone atop the Longs Peaks chase.  Both clubs were 6-1 in league play going but now Thompson Valley has the lead.  Mountain View, Riverdale Ridge and Frederick all started the night one game off the pace so the Warriors with their win stay involved the race for third.  Five teams started the night with one league loss inside the Pikes Peak with four of them going head-to-head this evening.  Lewis Palmer won one of the games over Liberty while Fountain Fort Carson worked double overtime to outlast Doherty.  Now the Rangers and Trojans are tied with Rampart for the conference lead.  The Rams meet Lewis Palmer on Thursday while Liberty looks to bounce back from tonight’s loss against Fountain Fort Carson.  Rampart kept pace with Lewis Palmer and FFC with a 83-53 decision over Discovery Canyon.  Steamboat Springs chalked up their 10th win against no losses in beating Summit on the road.  The Sailors keep their two game edge in the Western Slope.  They also opened the week topping the 4A RPI charts.

CLASS 5A

FINAL:  #2 Regis beat Valor Christian 73-48

FINAL:  #3 Rangeview beat #5 Chaparral 62-58

FINAL:  #9 Denver East beat #4 ThunderRidge 71-67 (OT)

FINAL:  #6 Mountain Vista beat Dakota Ridge 66-51

FINAL:  Horizon beat Rocky Mountain 76-61

FINAL:  Vista Peak beat Gateway 64-39

FINAL:  Fountain Fort Carson beat Doherty 73-72 (2 OT)

GAME NOTES:  Fountain Fort Carson and Doherty entered tonight part of a five-way league for the Pikes Peak league.  Those two along with Lewis Palmer, Rampart and Liberty all had one league loss going into play Tuesday night so now the Spartans fall back one game following the tough one-point loss.  Horizon and Rocky Mountain entered play tonight with one league loss and tied for second in the Front Range with Fossil Ridge.  All three trail unbeaten Fairview (7-0) in the standings but while the Lobos fall to fourth, the Hawks stay within range of the leading leading Knights.  Vista Peak handed Gateway their first EMAC loss tonight.  Both were unbeaten in league play and tied with Rangeview when the game tipped off.  The Raiders were outside the conference but scored a huge non-league win over Chaparral.  The Raiders have another big test with Valor Christian on Thursday while Gateway looks to rebound against Brighton that same night.
