The boys’ basketball schedule is a bit thin across the state this evening but it’s not lacking importance as several clubs need wins to stay in range of conference championships.  We will spend the night posting final scores for the top games and will also break down the impact on league races.

CLASS 1A

FINAL:  #7 Mile High Academy beat Denver Academy of Torah 71-49

FINAL:  Elbert beat Simla 44-40

GAME NOTES:  Elbert remained in first place in the Black Forest while Simla dropped one game off the pace.  Both teams were unbeaten and tied with Evangelical Christian to start the game but now it’s only the Bulldogs who have a share of the top spot.

CLASS 2A

FINAL:  Vail Mountain beat #9 Meeker 42-39

GAME NOTES:  The race atop the Western Slope North division jammed up a bit more with Vail Mountain’s win over Meeker.  The outcome leaves Vail Christian (3-0) alone in first but now the Gore Rangers and Cowboys are tied for second place with West Grand (4-2) just a game off the pace.  Meeker meets Vail Christian on Saturday and likely needs a win there to remain in the championship discussion.  They’re already beaten West Grand.  Vail Mountain and Vail Christian collide on March 4th.  Vail Christian and West Grand also meet this Friday.

CLASS 3A

FINAL:  #4 Sterling beat Valley 68-41

FINAL:  #9 Resurrection Christian beat Brush 47-44

GAME NOTES:  Sterling continues their march to the Patriot championship as tonight’s win pushes their league mark to 7-0.  They host Resurrection Christian on Friday and look to avenge their only loss of the year as they fell to the Cougars in non-league play back in week one.  Resurrection Christian made the Friday matchup important as they stunned Brush on a buzzer-beater.  The win kept the Cougars one game back of Sterling in the standings so Friday’s winner will have the league lead.  Brush suffered their second straight tough loss.  They were also beaten by Strasburg in overtime on Tuesday night so they’re now tied for fourth with University (4-3).  University created that tie by downing Eaton 62-46.  Bulldogs junior Tayt Chacon dropped in a cool 37 points and went over the 1,000 point mark on his career.  With the Brush loss, Strasburg bumps to third at 5-2.  University and Strasburg meet on Friday.

CLASS 4A

#1 Windsor at Greeley Central

FINAL:  #2 Longmont beat Skyline 42-36

#3 Mead at Centaurus (PPD)

FINAL:  #5 Lewis Palmer beat Palmer Ridge 68-48

FINAL:  #7 Evergreen beat Wheat Ridge 56-54

#8 Erie at Greeley West

FINAL:  #10 Golden beat Conifer 69-30

FINAL:  Silver Creek beat Holy Family 64-61

FINAL:  Elizabeth beat Falcon 78-77

GAME NOTES:  Lewis Palmer ended a 17-day stretch away from the court by beating Liberty 75-58 on Tuesday and tonight picked up another important conference win against the neighboring Bears.  They’re now 3-1 in the Pikes Peak and part of a first-place tie that also includes Rampart and Fountain Fort Carson.  Elizabeth used their narrow win over Falcon to keep pace with Sand Creek atop the Colorado Springs Metro North.  Both teams have one league loss.  The loss though was costly to the Falcons as their third conference setback likely takes them out of title contention.  Sand Creek holds the first-place tiebreaker based on their 64-59 win over the Cardinals on February 12th.  Silver Creek keeps hanging around concerning a top four finish in the rugged Northern league.  They opened the night tied with Mead, Holy Family and Erie for third place and the decision drops Holy Family out of that logjam.  Erie is favored at Greeley West while Mead’s game at Centaurus was postponed.  Longmont and Windsor started Wednesday sharing the conference lead.  Longmont will remain there based on their win over Skyline and Windsor should keep pace by beating Greeley Central.

CLASS 5A

FINAL:  #1 Cherry Creek beat Grandview 71-55

#7 George Washington vs Far Northeast

FINAL:  #8 Fossil Ridge beat Horizon 88-53

GAME NOTES:  After stumbling in the loss to Rocky Mountain last Friday (61-60), Fossil Ridge has now won two straight in dominating fashion; beating Poudre and Horizon by a combined 73 points.  Tonight’s victory keeps them tied with Rocky Mountain in second place with both trailing Fairview (7-0) by one game.  The Sabercats challenge the Knights next Friday.  Cherry Creek finishes off the regular season sweep of Grandview and keeps their hold on the Centennial chase.  They remain unbeaten for the season.
