Most league championships in boys basketball had already been handed out before action began on Friday but there were a few results that helped crown league winners.  We look at those and playoff results with our Friday rundown.

CLASS 1A

  • DeBeque repeats as the 2A/1A Western Slope as they downed Rangely 43-40 and Soroco upset Vail Christian 73-66.  The results left both DeBeque and Vail Christian tied for first with the Dragons getting the edge based on their win over the Saints.
  • Briggsdale recovers nicely from a lopsided loss to Merino to bounce Prairie 61-50 and clinch the North Central championship.  They will enter the District 4 tournament as the number one seed.
  • Kit Carson finished off a perfect run through the High Plains schedule with their 66-35 win over McClave.  The Wildcats had already clinched the top district seed before the game.
  • Edison stayed alone atop the Black Forest with a 66-45 win over Hanover.  The Eagles must still beat Pikes Peak Christian on Saturday to win the championship as a loss drops them into a three-way tie with PPC and Evangelical Christian.

CLASS 2A

  • Mancos will be the number one seed in District 3 after beating Telluride.  The win kept the Bluejays tied with Ignacio atop the San Juan standings but Mancos earns the top seed based on point differential in the two games between the clubs.
  • Sanford wrapped up second place in the Southern Peaks with their win over Sargent 61-25.  The decision also allowed Crested Butte to clinch the league championship regardless of the outcome of their game with Sargent on Saturday.
  • Rye advanced into the District 6 quarterfinals with a win over Las Animas.  The Thunderbolts next head to Holly on Monday.

CLASS 3A

  • Vanguard bounces back from a tough loss to Manitou Springs earlier in the week to edge DSST-Byers 52-50.  The game will impact the state tournament bracket as the Coursers were #4 in RPI going in and DSST-Byers #9.
  • Resurrection Christian, University, Eaton and Sterling are the top four seeds in the Patriot district tournament and all four advanced to the semifinals with wins on Friday.  University will now head to Resurrection Christian in one semifinal and Eaton visits Sterling in other.  Both games are set for Tuesday.

CLASS 4A

  • Lewis Palmer’s upset of #4 Cheyenne Mountain pushed the Rangers to second in the Pikes Peak conference.  The Rangers ended up 9-5 and in a tie with Sand Creek but two wins over the Scorpions move them into second.  Cheyenne Mountain had already clinched the title before the game got underway.
  • Glenwood Springs concluded a perfect 12-0 mark in the Western Slope with an overtime win over Palisade.
  • Conifer earned the Colorado 8 league tournament crown with a 63-58 home win over 3A Fort Lupton.  The Lobos were also the regular season conference champions but tonight’s win assures them a spot in the state tournament bracket.
  • Frederick’s win over Erie dropped the Tigers out of a three-way tie for second behind Mead in the Tri Valley.  The Tigers finished the league slate at 11-5 and one game back of Windsor and Skyline (both 12-4).  The Wizards won both meetings with Skyline in the regular season so they own the tiebreaker.

CLASS 5A

  • Chaparral landed the Continental crown with their 85-68 win over Legend.   The Wolverines finished one game ahead of Mountain Vista who secured second with their win over ThunderRidge (65-57).
  • Ralston Valley is the Jeffco champion.  The Mustangs topped Arvada West 60-30 to remain tied with Valor Christian atop the standings but a head-to-head win over the Eagles hands the title to Ralston.  The Mustangs won just three games two years ago.
  • With Fairview topping Broomfield, Horizon is the third place team in the Front Range.  The Broomfield loss dropped the Eagles into a tie with Horizon but the Hawks won the head-to-head matchup.  Fairview is the league champion with Boulder #2.
