It’s not too far-fetched to think Buena Vista’s win over Limon last week was the Demons’ biggest football victory in about a decade.

Now, coach Matt Flavin and his squad must look ahead with clear vision, as the statement win will only make future opponents even more determined to be the ones to take them back down a notch.

Buena Vista (4-0) was down 10-0 into the fourth quarter of their home game against the Badgers (3-1) before senior Hudson Wingo delivered a pair of touchdown passes to Knox Reid and Caleb Pierce, the latter with about four minutes to play to make it 13-10. Buena Vista then held off a dangerous Limon offense to nab the victory.

“We snuck one away from them … and the most enjoyable thing about the game was that both teams played it the right way,” Flavin told the Colorado Preps Show this week. “We’ve never beat Limon … there’s that pillar of football, I think, and to be able to compete and have a chance to win there at the end was really big for our community, I think.”

The Demons have allowed their depth to keep them moving forward. Six different running backs have scored touchdowns on the ground this season so far, and five players have combined for 10 touchdowns through the air, too. Defensively, BVHS has produced six interceptions and 13 turnovers overall. And while the team’s senior class has been exceptional, junior Casen Pridemore has had a nice start to the season with a team-leading 262 rushing yards and four total TDs.

A state semifinalist last season, Buena Vista now embarks on Tri-Peaks League play as the new No. 1 ranked team in Class 1A. And on Friday, it’ll have to be ready for an improved team from Ellicott (4-1), which comes in having allowed just 47 points so far this season.

It doesn’t stop there, however, as every program in the TPL — Rye (4-1), Peyton (3-2) and Colorado Springs Christian (3-2) — has a winning record at this point. And a non-league game against 3A Steamboat Springs (4-0) will put them to the test.

“We had a lot of mistakes, and so we want to make sure they understand that, yes, this was a big win, but there’s a lot of growth that we need to do going forward,” Flavin said.

Notable games this week:

Class 2A

Eaton at University, Friday, 7 p.m.

Plenty to choose from with three top-10 matchups this week, but Eaton-University is the longstanding regional rivalry game that brings out all the best in high school ball. Eaton has rebounded from a season-opening loss with three straight victories (outscoring teams 99-21), and junior Jackson Savona has back-to-back 100-plus yard rushing games with five TDs over that stretch. University won a squeaker, 28-27 at Rifle last week, as Max Davis threw four TD passes to rally the Bulldogs. While EHS has dominated this series as a whole, the teams have split victories the past two seasons.

Class 1A

Holyoke at Wray, Saturday, 1 p.m.

Both teams are 2-2 entering North Central League play, and Holyoke has a little bit of momentum coming off Colby Weber’s six-touchdown effort against Peyton two weeks ago. Wray will be trying to pick itself up from two losses in which it only produced 20 total points. The Eagles have won five of the past six matchups.

8-man

Mancos at Dove Creek, Thursday, 7 p.m.

Dove Creek hasn’t played an in-state opponent in about a month, but the Bulldogs are eager to bite into the Bluejays this week after posting 64 points last weekend. Cael Beanland accounted for 356 total yards for DCHS, while Nicholas Aragon also had a great game. Mancos has allowed just 20 points as it looks to move to 4-1, with J.H. Ritter leading the way defensively.

6-man

Cheyenne Wells at Fleming, Friday, 7 p.m.

Cheyenne Wells has blown out its most recent three opponents by a combined 165-28, while Fleming has also posted 141 points over a three-game win streak. Particularly on fire have been CWHS’ Trevin Smith and FHS’ Jaron Monroe, both who are sophomores.
