DENVER – Nothing builds confidence liking knocking a No. 1 seed at a state tournament. Cherry Creek had to have left The Denver Coliseum Thursday night beaming with confidence after topping Chaparral 25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22 to get out of Day 1 without a loss.

The Wolverines were the No. 1 overall seed on the Class 5A tournament bracket, while Cherry Creek came into the state tournament as the No. 8 seed.

The win for the Bruins was also the biggest upset across all classifications for the entire first day. Although it may not have been the best two-match piece of work by any one team. The Bruins opened their day with a sweep over No. 9 Rock Canyon before moving on to beat Chap.

But in 4A, Mead knocked off a big dig dog, right after knocking off a big bird.

The No. 12 Mavericks beat No. 5 Montrose and then turned around to beat No. 4 Battle Mountain. Mead now has a tough matchup with No. 1 Thompson Valley, who shook off a first-set loss to beat Windsor 3-1.

Several other tops seeds were in danger of falling early, but battled through to head into the second day without a loss. Pine Creek took Mountain Vista to five sets, but as they reached match point, a couple of big kills from Bridget Malone got the Golden Eagles the win.

Fleming held off a strong run from Stratton, winning in five sets to advance to a Day 2 match with No. 2 Idalia.

Brooke Gennerman led No. 2 Lewis-Palmer as it batting through a tough five-set win against University.

There were also high seeds that had no problem cruising through their matches. It was all chalk in 3A with the top four seeds leaving the Coliseum without a loss on Thursday.

Valor Christian fought off a resilient Pueblo West team and Sedgwick County made quick work of Rye. Merino also looked poised to defend its title, as it rolled by Sargent.

Heading into Friday, four teams in each classification will have a chance to punch their tickets to their respective semifinals.
