The job of a prep baseball coach is far from easy. He must manage talent, egos, inning pitched, injuries and whatever else comes his way.
Couple all that with the most important goal, which is to win games.
As the 2026 season has progressed some coaches have obviously done a better job than others when it comes to capturing victories. The success of some coaches is obvious based on the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index.
Here’s what the Top 5 looks like in Class 3A: University (15-2); Eaton (12-2); Prospect Ridge Academy (11-4); Montezuma-Cortez (9-5); and Aspen (11-2).
In 2A, Forge Christian (13-1); Monte Vista (14-0); Yuma (9-4); Wray (12-2) and Dayspring Christian (9-4) make up the Top 5.
As for 1A, Flatirons Academy (13-2); Haxtun (10-5); Akron (10-4); Merino (10-6) and Eads (12-1) are the Top 5 in the Seeding Index.
Class 3A
Moffat County (3-9) at Aspen (11-2), 2 p.m., (DH) April 24
Aspen in the prep ranks is a state power in skiing winning 12 boys titles and 11 in girls skiing. Baseball is not on that list, but that may change this season. The Skiers have won four games in a row and have outscored their opponents 156-44. Most recently, Aspen clubbed Meeker (21-0) on April 21.
Aspen’s offense is powered by Dylan Mika (.541); Caden LaPointe (.486) and William Marolt (.415). Mika and Marolt are seniors and LaPointe is a sophomore.
The Skiers should be able to plow through Moffat County. Moffat County had lost five games in a row before edging Coal Ridge (4-3). The Bulldogs top offensive hitter is sophomore Zach Winder, who is hitting .469.
Class 2A
Eaton (12-2) at Forge Christian (13-1), 1 p.m., April 25
This is a heavyweight matchup between the top two teams in 3A and 2A. This is a great barometer where each team can find out just where they are at right now in the season and what adjustments they need to make to claim more state championship glory.
Eaton has won 15 baseball state championships in its school’s history, most recently in 2024. This season, Eaton is led by Greyson Clingan (.524); Malaki Dalpra (.524) and Brayden Legler (.444). Jackson Denooy leads the team with three home runs.
Forge Christian is powered by Ben Mclean (.604); Carsen Hughes (.531); and Sam Buerck (.479). McLean also has a .618 on-base percentage and 13 stolen bases.
Class 1A
Akron (10-4) at Limon (9-3), 4:30 p.m., April 23
Akron has moved up to No. 3 in the 1A Seeding Index. The Rams are coming off a 12-2 win over Holyoke on April 21. Akron is fueled by Jax Kusel (.561); Parker Molt (.348); and Kolten Randel (.314). Limon is a 2A powerhouse and a win by the Rams over the Badgers would put them on solid footing as the regular season is coming to a close sooner than later.
Akron won the school’s inaugural baseball state title in 2025 and would love nothing more than to go back-to-back.
Limon is always in the state championship conversation, and the Badgers are aiming for their fifth state baseball title in school history and first since 2022.
Limon’s top offensive hitters are Brooks Scherrer (.475); Camdyn Tacha (.412) and Riley Davis (.370).
