Looking through the prep boys basketball lens might not show the whole picture.
And at this point in the season – the last two weeks of January – teams are trying to put things in focus.
That’s definitely the case in the Class 3A, 2A and 1A ranks right now.
In the latest 3A CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index there has been some movement in the last week.
Banning Lewis Academy (11-0) is in the top spot, replacing Forge Christian (12-1) which dropped to No. 4. Strasburg (11-0) is No. 2 and Yuma (11-1) is the new No. 3 team.
Yuma is powered by Brody Sheffield. The 6-foot-2 guard is averaging 24.7 ppg, 8.2 rebounds, 5 assists and one block per game.
The Outlaws beat Platte Valley 55-52 on Tuesday to run their winning streak to nine games. Up next for Yuma is a home game against Highland (7-4) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Like 3A, 2A saw a shakeup in the top of the RPI. Byers (7-1) has moved up from No. 2 to No. 1, followed by Simla (5-3) and Twin Peaks Classical Academy (10-0) – the previous No. 1 team last week.
In 1A, Nucla (12-0), which wasn’t in the top three last week is No. 1, followed by Cheyenne Wells (8-1), the previous No. 1, and McClave (8-1), which dropped from No. 2 to No. 3.
Here’s a sampling of a handful of games to keep an eye on in the coming days of the 3A, 2A and 1A slate.
Class 3A
Roaring Fork (9-2) at Meeker (7-4), 4 p.m., Jan. 24
Roaring Fork has had a solid season – posting a 9-2 record – placing it No. 13 in the recent 3A RPI rankings.
The Rams have won six games in a row, including an 89-67 victory over Olathe on Jan. 17. Roaring Fork is led by senior Lucas Carballeira who is scoring 21.3 ppg. Fellow senior Kiko Pena is chipping in 14 ppg, followed by junior Quentin Galbraith at 12 ppg.
Meeker, which is ranked No. 25, will counter with junior Trent Sanders at 18.9 ppg.
The winner of this game will get a solid shot in the arm in the RPI rankings, especially Meeker.
Class 2A
Vanguard Classical East (6-6) at Vail Christian (8-2), 5:30 p.m., Jan. 23
VCE has won two games in a row and will try to keep things rolling as the week closes out and the Hawks take on Vail Christian.
VCE needs a win in a bad way as it is No. 35 in the latest RPI and a win over No. 7-ranked Vail Christian would be a huge boost to its postseason aspirations.
The Hawks’ top scorer is James Coleman. The freshman is pouring in 25.8 ppg. He gets help from fellow freshmen Landen Campbell (11.6 ppg) and DeKimbae High (11.5 ppg). Vail Christian is paced by Oliver Neumann (15.4 ppg) and Ryan Romanin (11.5 ppg). Both are juniors. The Saints are riding a seven-game winning streak.
Class 1A
Prairie (8-3) at Evangel Christian Academy (7-2), 6:30 p.m., Friday
This is a big clash between two teams in the Top 10 of Class 1A’s RPI rankings. Prairie is No. 5 in the rankings and ECA is No. 9. A game like this offers a solid barometer to let these teams know where they are at and where they are headed.
Prairie has stumbled a little recently, posting a 2-2 record, but the Mustangs did win their last outing 53-44 over Peetz on Jan. 20.
Prairie has losses to Wiggins (40-29, Dec. 20); Haxtun (53-51, Jan. 10) and Kimball (65-48, Jan. 17). The Mustangs will try and flex their muscles against Evangel Christian Academy.
ECA will answer with a five-game winning streak, including a 69-39 drubbing of Las Animas on Jan. 17 in its last outing.
