It may very well be that Class 5A’s League 4 is a loaded beast, but don’t think for a minute that Colorado Academy’s boys lacrosse team is intimidated by that.
The fourth-ranked Mustangs have been on quite the run since dropping a non-league contest to Regis Jesuit back on April 2. The team opened League 4 play by downing Cherokee Trail, and upended then-4A No. 1 Dakota Ridge five days later. Colorado Academy has run through the league from there, downing Grandview, Denver South and Kent Denver, and the Mustangs (10-2, 5-0) held off No. 2 Arapahoe 11-7 on Wednesday night.
Sixth-ranked Denver East awaits Friday, with top-ranked and undefeated Cherry Creek looming Tuesday.
Senior Teddy Hardy has been the catalyst for an offense that has averaged 13 goals a contest since the loss to the Raiders. Hardy tied a season-high with six goals against the Sun Devils on Saturday, and had 31 goals and 16 assists to his credit going into the Arapahoe game. Fellow senior Cash McCoy was just behind Hardy in points with 20 goals and 24 assists. Another senior, Noah Stull, had 12 goals and 21 assists.
Last April the Mustangs trailed Cherry Creek by only one at the half before eventually falling 12-9. The team reached the quarterfinals of the postseason, but lost to Legend.
Cherry Creek (11-0, 4-0) played Grandview on Wednesday night. The Bruins were coming off a 15-7 triumph over East the previous week, backed by five goals from Wyatt Branish.
With less than one week remaining in April and the playoffs coming up fast, here is a quick glance around the state:
