Playoff bracketing is a hot topic across the high school football rankings these days as the post-season quickly approaches. A new feature to the seeding process this year involves a formula based on what we call the composite rankings which combines the vote totals from four separate polls. The sources are the CHSAA coaches poll, MaxPreps, the RPI and the Packard rankings. Teams are awarded 10 points for a first place vote in any poll, nine for a second place vote, eight for third, seven for fourth and so on through the top 10 in each set of rankings.
Cherry Creek (5A) is the lone unanimous number one choice as they received all 40 potential points this week. Pine Creek (4A) just missed joining them as they were ranked second in RPI but first in the remaining three sources. Mead (3A), Sterling (2A) and Stasburg (1A) all received 38 points this week and they sit atop their respective division.
The regular season in 5A, 2A, and 1A wraps up this week so a final set of composite rankings will likely be posted either Saturday night or Sunday morning ahead of the playoff bracket release on Sunday. Classes 3A and 4A have two more games to play so those rankings won’t be finalized until November 9-10th.
As we do each week, all teams that received at least one vote in a poll are listed. Eight man is not included here as that division will not use composite rankings as part of the seeding process but we will post in a different story. Six man begins their playoff season this week so rankings are not included.
