A new wrinkle to playoff seeding for Class 3A and 4A this year includes the availability of use of composite football rankings. RPI is again used to determine playoff qualifers but once teams are decided, other rankings such as MaxPreps, CHSAA Coaches and Packard can be used to help seed the teams in the bracket. CHSAA refers to this as the Football Index but we call it the Composite Rankings as we combine the rankings of those four polls.
We post data available at this time (Sunday Morning). Please note that the formula used by CHSAA includes a weighted system on the coaches poll based on first place votes received. We do not include that in our rankings below. Note that we do not include the latest rankings from MaxPreps as the site has not provided new rankings this morning. We will update when they become available.
Results of the Football Index were used heavily by the seeding committee to finalize the playoff brackets in Classes 2A and 1A last week. Since committee members are the same, we believe the rankings will again be a main factor on where teams are placed in the pairings.
During the regular season, we list only the top 10 of our composite rankings but for the final release, we rank the 16 qualifiers as based on RPI released on Sunday. So with the extended rankings, teams that receive a first place vote in any poll receives 16 points, a second place vote involves 15 points and so on through the top 16.
