For the second time this season, Colorado Preps is providing what we call Consensus Rankings where voting totals from various rankings outlets create a more in-depth Top 10. As mentioned in our first report, these rankings were for fun in the past but now carry some weight because a formula based on these numbers can be used this year to help seed the playoff brackets.
The totals represent votes placed in the CHSAA, RPI, MaxPreps and Packard rankings. Teams get 10 points for a first place vote, nine for second, eight for third and so on through the Top 10 in each poll. These numbers are then tabulated to come up with an “consensus set of rankings”. A team that gains 40 points is an unanimous number one choice. Our list includes every team that gained at least one vote in any of the four polls.
Please note that league champions get an automatic playoff bid and RPI will be exclusively used to determine the remaining playoff qualifiers. But now the seeding committee for Classes 1A through 5A can use a formula based on numbers from other polls to move teams up or down in the final playoff bracket. One committee will be used to seed all 11-man brackets.
Our totals based on numbers from today (October 9th) are below.
There is a three-way tie for the top spot in Class 5A as Columbine, Cherry Creek and Valor Christian all ended up with 36 points. Pine Creek is the unanimous choice at number one in Class 4A and Mead just missed out on joining them in Class 3A. The Mavericks are second in the CHSAA Coaches poll but earned the top spot in all remaining polls.
Sterling and Strasburg are the number one teams in Classes 2A and 1A respectively. We will post consensus rankings for eight and six man divisions later today.
