WHAT IF A DIFFERENT REGIONAL FORMAT FOR 2A/1A VOLLEYBALL

Tuesday Volleyball

Started wondering over the weekend about a different regional format in Class 1A and 2A volleyball.  Our system would involve seeding the district champions 1-8 based on RPI and then using the same standings to place teams 9-24 in the bracket.  The idea is to begin the discussion on finding a better format than a pre-set regional bracket pairing up two different districts.  In the current format, some teams find better placement in regionals by not winning their own district.

Under our format idea, travel is the biggest concern.  For example in Class 2A, Hoehne (in our pairings) would be shipped to Meeker, Telluride would head to Denver Christian and Dayspring Christian would be off to Sargent.

Similar concerns would be found in the 1A bracket as our pairings have Nucla going to Kit Carson, Sangre De Cristo to Otis and Dove Creek to Genoa Hugo and others.

If this format was ever put in place, the seeding committee would need to have the option to move teams around as they currently do in other sports.

But using our system, the pairings would shape up like this.

  1. Kevin, that’s an interesting take as there was talk (purely theoretical) in the halls at Dawson last Friday of Dayspring potentially tanking the last match against Dawson to avoid Yuma and set up the re-match with Lyons.

    • That’s why I don’t like a pre-set bracket – teams/players/coaches start to look at the bracket and think it might be better to lose a game – not sure we should ever put teams in that position where losing is better than winning.

  2. Travel concerns are already there and not being addressed. In 1A our district 1 has to play district 6…. De Beque is traveling to La Veta. That’s a 6 hour trip (not counting bathroom breaks!). I also think, if we’re going to rank with RPI we might as well use it.
