They are non-league games but a couple of small school top 10 battles draw quite a bit of attention on the Saturday girls’ basketball schedule.  Both feature the top three teams in Class 1A as the teams continue to prep for what they hope will be a long post-season run.

The first is the state championship rematch between #2 Flatirons Academy and #3 Fleming.  They collide in Westminster and both teams the game at 15-1 with a lone loss to top ranked Briggsdale.  The outcome is very important because if both teams advance to the state tournament then the winner should land the higher seed and also have a good chance of being opposite Briggsdale in the bracket.

Briggsdale is home to host #5 Sedgwick County (2A).  It’s the second meeting between the two Northeast clubs with the Falcons taking game one 49-24 back in very early December.  The Falcons are 16-0; Sedgwick County dropped to 12-3 with a surprising loss to Burlington on Friday night.

Couple of other games of note in Class 1A as well today.  Dove Creek can clinch the San Juan title with a second win over Dolores and the winner between Sierra Grande-Centennial could end up second to Sangre De Cristo in the 1A Southern Peaks.

In Class 2A, we think the non-league battle between #8 Dayspring Christian and Peyton could be a good one.  Healthier than the start of the season, Peyton has come on strong of late and will be a number one seed for their district tournament.  They’ve beaten both Yuma and Simla over the past couple of weeks.  Dayspring Christian is coming off a hard-fought 55-50 loss to Heritage Christian that cost them a share of the Mile High lead.  They must avoid looking past today’s game to Tuesday against Highland in a game that will decide second in the conference.

Burlington’s win over Sedgwick County on Friday shows just how wild the District Two tournament could be.  There’s a good chance Sedgwick County could be the two seed and Burlington number eight but the game reflects how the close the teams are.  Another indication of that is today’s Lower Platte game between Wray and Wiggins.  Both are 2-3 in the conference but each played first place Holyoke to within 10 points in league action.

Lutheran (9-0) and Skyview Academy (7-0) battle for the 3A Metro championship today and the top seed in the district tournament.  They’re also side-by-side in RPI (13 & 14) so it’s important those standings as well.  Lutheran has outscored nine league opponents by 385 points and Skyview Academy their seven by 112.

#7 George Washington (4A) scored a quality 40-27 win over Lutheran earlier this week and now the Patriots set their sights on another quality non-league opponent in Rangeview.  The Raiders are 15-3 and have won six-in-row since a loss to top ranked Valor Christian.  GW must not look ahead to next week when they face both Denver East for the likely DPL crown.

Glenwood Springs (4A West Slope) can clinch their league title by beating Steamboat Springs today.  The Demons (9-0) lead second place Summit by two games and have beaten the Tigers twice in conference play.  A win gives the Demons a two-game edge with two league games remaining next week.

In Class 5A, Grandview and Arapahoe are 1-2 in the Centennial and look to stay in those spots with wins today.  Fruita Monument is also on the road to Durango needing a win to stay one-up on Grand Junction Central in the Southwestern league.  Central beat the Demons on Friday.  Doherty and Palmer also renew a long-standing rivalry  in Colorado Springs.

Below is the entire schedule for top 10 teams.  We’ll update scores throughout the night and then below the rankings, update some games that impact league championship races.  Final scores can be sent to Colorado Preps by text to 970.380.7737.
