A good share of the Wednesday activity in girls’ basketball is centered on Classes 4A and 5A but there’s also a big contest in Class 1A. We look at all the important results from the across and then break down what the results mean to conference races and the playoff situation.
CLASS 1A
FINAL: #8 Elbert beat #5 Simla 38-35
GAME NOTES: Elbert hands Simla their second loss of the season but first in conference play. The result leaves the two teams tied for second in the Black Forest and one game back of Evangelical Christian. Since both teams have a game left with the Eagles, the race is far from over.
CLASS 4A
#1 Holy Family at Silver Creek (Cancelled)
FINAL: #2 Green Mountain beat #10 D’Evelyn 78-53
FINAL: #3 George Washington beat Far Northeast 60-26
FINAL: #4 Falcon beat Elizabeth 54-36
FINAL: #5 Mullen beat Smoky Hill 96-24
FINAL: #6 Windsor beat Greeley Central 64-30
FINAL: #7 Classical Academy beat Sand Creek 83-41
FINAL: #8 Canon City beat Coronado 40-12
GAMES NOTES: Falcon clinched the Colorado Springs Metro North race by beating Elizabeth on Wednesday. The Falcons entered the game with a two-game edge on Classical Academy and the cushion remained the same as the Titans moved past Sand Creek. But each team has just one conference game left; giving the Falcons the crown and the automatic playoff berth that goes with it. Windsor kept a piece of second place behind Holy Family in the Northern conference. The Tigers stayed put at 6-0 when their game with Silver Creek was postponed due to COVID. Mead is tied with Windsor in second place but is off until next Tuesday’s game with Erie. Mullen’s lopsided win over Smoky Hill kept the Mustangs tied with Arapahoe (both 8-2) for second in the Centennial. They meet for a second time next week. Green Mountain’s win over D’Evelyn is considered a non-league victory. The Jeffco league closed out their conference schedule last week with Green Mountain winning the title by one game over the Jags. The Rams are also in the chase for the top overall playoff seed. Canon City also clinched the Colorado Springs Metro South division crown by downing Coronado for a second time this year. The Tigers remain unbeaten against conference rivals.
CLASS 5A
FINAL: #1 Grandview beat Cherry Creek 63-36
FINAL: Horizon beat #5 Fossil Ridge 50-42
FINAL: #8 Arapahoe beat Overland 71-13
GAME NOTES: Arapahoe maintains a share of second place in the Centennial with the easy win against Overland. The win moves the Warriors to 8-2 in league play and tied with Mullen for the runner-up spot. Grandview continues to lead the division but must play both second place teams in the final week. They kept their perfect overall record intact with a second win this year Cherry Creek. Monarch slammed Boulder 66-18 early in the night to reach 7-1 inside the Front Range and Horizon matched that mark with an upset of #5 Fossil Ridge. The Hawks and Coyotes now share the top spot with Fossil Ridge sliding down to a third place tie with Broomfield at 6-2. Monarch has the edge over Horizon since they beat the Hawks 58-56 early in the season. Fossil Ridge also beat Broomfield in overtime on February 12th so they have the tiebreaker in that head-to-head battle.
