More league championship trophies were handed out in girls’ basketball as teams competed in the final Friday of the regular season.  We look at those results in all five classes.

CLASS 1A

  • Lone Star grabbed their first YWKC title since 2000 by beating Arickaree/Woodlin.  The Longhorns won all four league games to end up one game better than Idalia.  Arickaree/Woodlin slid to third as they also lost to Idalia earlier this week.
  • Kit Carson is the High Plains league champion.  They started the night one game up on McClave and landed the championship by beating the Cardinals 59-30.
  • Briggsdale beat Prairie 56-36 to remain tied with Fleming atop the North Central.  The third tie-breaker will be needed to separate the two clubs atop the district tournament.  The first tiebreak is head-to-head and the rivals split two league games.  The second is overall winning percentage and both programs ended the season at 18-1.  RPI is the third tiebreaker and those numbers won’t be finalized until late Saturday or early Sunday.

CLASS 2A

  • Ignacio scored a big non-conference win over #4 Pagosa Springs (36-35) and will enter the post-season with plenty of momentum.  The Bobcats are the overwhelming favorite to win the District 3 tournament next week.
  • Simla is the Black Forest champion after beating Colorado Springs School 42-40.  Both teams were unbeaten in league play to start the night so the Cubs also secured the top district seed.  Peyton and Calhan meet on Saturday for third and fourth.
  • Meeker and Hotchkiss had already clinched the top two spots in the Western Slope but Soroco lands third with their win over Vail Christian.  The Rams stayed tied with Hayden at 7-4 but won the conference matchup over the Tigers to gain the higher post-season seed.
  • Heritage Christian ended up 12-0 in the Mile High with a win over Front Range Christian (53-19).  The Eagles won the crown by one game over Dawson (10-1) and those two will be the top two seeds for the district tournament next week.

CLASS 3A

  • Academy is the lone unbeaten team in Class 3A as the Wildcats bumped to 19-0 with a win over Platte Canyon 82-15.  St Mary’s and Lutheran enter the playoffs at 18-2.

CLASS 5A

  • Thornton’s 41-25 win over Northglenn kept the Trojans part of the three-way tie for the East Metro crown with Rangeview and Vista Peak.  All three teams have one league loss but Rangeview still has a game with Gateway coming up on Saturday.
