Fossil Ridge beat Cherokee Trail on Saturday for its 16th straight victory, dating back to last season’s 5A state title run.
Yes, the SaberCats (7-0) are back at No. 1 in the 5A classification a year after beating Castle View in the 5A final at Weidner Field.
They’re led offensively by Lily Wale, a Washington State commit who scored 10 goals as a junior and has five through seven games this spring. Last Tuesday, she scored three times and added two assists in an 8-1 win over 2025 4A runner-up Windsor.
On Saturday, the SaberCats will be on the road against No. 6 Mountain Vista in what will be one of the most intriguing matchups in the state this week. The Golden Eagles (7-0-1) were the No. 1 seed in last year’s 5A postseason, though they lost in overtime to Valor Christian in the quarterfinals. Before that they handed Fossil Ridge its last loss, beating the SaberCats 2-0 on April 19, 2025.
Mountain Vista’s upcoming schedule, meanwhile, is as daunting as any in the state. The Golden Eagles face 2025 5A runner-up Castle View on Thursday, then host defending champs on Saturday and 2025 semifinalist Broomfield on April 22.
Speaking of Broomfield, the No. 11 Eagles pulled off the biggest win of the past week, beating No. 2 Ralston Valley on April 6. They’re led by North Carolina commit Marin Kotschau, who has nine goals and two assists this season. She assisted on Allie Heasty’s game-winning goal against the Mustangs.
Below are some other intriguing games to watch over the next week.
