Coming off the best season in program history, Riverdale Ridge’s stock in girls soccer remains on the rise.
For one, because of junior forward Molly Wilkinson.
Wilkinson leads the state with 20 goals and has her team rolling. A season after the Ravens reached the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, the Thornton program has started the spring 6-0-1, ranking sixth in the classification.
On Thursday, the junior scored four times in an 8-0 win over Skyline. It was her third game with at least four goals this season.
In this week’s look at the state’s soccer scene, let’s dive into some statistical leaders and what it has meant for their respective clubs.
Class 5A
Goals: Vista Ridge’s Rowan Wolthuis and Loveland’s Makenna Bruno, 12 apiece
After netting 22 goals as a sophomore, Wolthuis is on pace to surpass that amount as a junior. Fueling the Wolves to a 5-1-1 start this spring, she has led the way with 12 goals. On Friday, she recorded her third game of the season with at least three goals, scoring four times in a 7-0 win over Widefield.
Bruno, on the other hand, surpassed her sophomore goal total of eight weeks ago. She scored her 12th of her junior season on Monday in a 7-1 loss to Rocky Mountain. When Bruno has scored multiple goals in a game this spring, the Red Wolves (4-5) are 4-0.
Bruno also leads the classification in points, with 28 (12 goals, four assists). Wolthuis is tied for second with Horizon’s Mia Kresnik at 27.
Goals-against average: Lakewood’s Savannah Galvan — four goals allowed in seven games (.587)
Among goalkeepers with at least 500 minutes played this season, Galvan has the best goals-against average in the classification. She’s made 30 saves on 34 shots, often rescuing the Tigers, who have started the spring 3-2-2. On Thursday, she couldn’t save them, making six saves in a 1-0 loss to Prairie View.
Class 4A
Goals: Riverdale Ridge’s Wilkinson, 20
While, on the one hand, Wilkinson has accounted for 23 of her team’s 47 goals this season, the Ravens have yet to allow a goal through a 6-0-1 start to the spring. Wilkinson has scored multiple goals in each of her team’s six wins. The other was a scoreless draw against 5A No. 19 Denver North last month.
Points: Palmer’s Skylar Angelidis, 44 (19 goals, six assists)
The sophomore is building upon her 24-goal freshman season, with 44 points through her first seven games. On Monday, she netted a hat trick as the Terrors (5-2) beat Thomas MacLaren School 6-0. On Tuesday, Angelidis and Palmer will host 5A goals leader Wolthuis and Vista Ridge.
Class 3A
Goals: Aurora West College Prep Academy’s Yosseline Silva Monsivais, 16
Monsivais surpassed her freshman goal total of 15 with her 16th as a sophomore in last week’s 3-2 loss to Hinkley. The Spartans, who haven’t finished a season with a winning record since going 8-7 in 2018, are off to a 6-2 start this spring.
Saves: Mitchell’s Angel Boston, 90
The save stat in girls soccer is much like the mind of a teen — complicated. Is the way a save is recorded consistent across teh board? Probably not. Is it a stat a team often wants their goalkeeper to lead the state in? No.
Boston has faced a class-high 115 shots through just seven games for the Marauders (1-6). On Monday, she made 22 saves, though it wasn’t enough in an 8-0 loss to Mesa Ridge.
Class 2A
Goals: Lotus School for Excellence’s Mabel Ramon, 16
The senior has scored at least three goals in four of her team’s seven games this season. A week ago, she scored her 16th in an 8-2 loss to Thomas MacLaren School. That game featured the classification’s co-leaders in points, with Ramon and Thomas MacLaren’s Sara Christensen both at 34.
Saves: Moffat County’s Vanessa Herrera, 116
Moffat County (1-6) has its senior keeper credited with 116 saves over seven games. That’s a whole bunch. The Bulldogs won their opening game of the season against Grand Valley — a 2-1 victory behind 10 saves from Herrera — but have been outscored 50-0 since.
