Familiar faces are crowding the top of the Class 5A rankings in boys’ soccer, now just three weeks into the fall season.

Defending champ Broomfield is No. 1 in 5A’s current CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index, followed by Boulder and Cherry Creek. The Eagles lead the state with nine titles all-time, all since 1999. The Panthers have won both of their titles since 2012 and the Bruins have six titles, their first coming in 1975.

Rounding out the top five is Northfield — a team that reached the 4A finals the past three seasons, winning it twice — and Monarch. The Coyotes have never reached a soccer state championship game.

In this week’s look-in on boys’ soccer, let’s dive into each classification’s top-five teams.

Class 5A

Top five: Broomfield, Boulder, Cherry Creek, Northfield and Monarch.

Notables: Broomfield (4-0) hasn’t allowed a goal through its first four games, pushing its winning streak to 11 games dating back to last year’s title run.

Meanwhile, Boulder (3-0) has won its first three games by a margin of 15-2. Junior Mikel Mackey’s three goals and three assists leads the way. And as part of its start, it beat Legacy (last year’s 5A No. 1 seed), 9-0, on Aug. 29.

Behind the Panthers, the Bruins (5-0) allowed their first goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Fairview a week ago. They’re outscoring teams 11-1 on the year.

Meanwhile, Northfield (3-0-1) has gotten a combined 23 saves and one allowed goal from its goalkeeper tandem of Zander Kosmas and Braeden Condit. Monarch (3-0) got a hat trick from senior George Behringer in a 4-0 win over Poudre last week.

Class 4A

Top five: Centaurus, Mullen, Longmont, Wheat Ridge and Silver Creek.

Notables: A lot more may be known about Centaurus (3-0) after the next few days. A semifinalist a year ago, the Warriors are home against 5A No. 2 Boulder Tuesday, then they’re at 4A No. 2 Mullen on Thursday.

Before the latter game, the Mustangs (2-0) wrapped up a strong showing against the 3A Metro League’s elite, beating Colorado Academy and Kent Denver in their last two games.

Longmont (4-0), meanwhile, is off to a strong start after having its first winning season since 2015 a year ago. Noah Chavarria leads the way with six goals and three assists.

Rounding out the top five, Wheat Ridge (2-0-1) has gotten nine saves in three games from keeper Drew Miller. Silver Creek (3-1) has gotten multiple goals from five different players in four games.

Class 3A

Top five: Lamar, Manitou Springs, Holy Family, Stargate School and The Academy.

Notables: Luis Hernandez has 18 saves in the first two games of the year for Lamar (2-0), which lost in the opening round of the 3A playoffs a year ago.

Behind the top-ranked Thunder, Manitou Springs (4-0) has gotten a 3A-best 13 goals from Alexander Steger. Holy Family (4-0), meanwhile, has gotten four from junior Oliver Hansen, who had two in a 3-1 win over Middle Park last week.

At No. 4 and 5, Stargate School (4-0) has scored 20 goals in four games, including 10 in a 10-zip win over Valley last week. The Academy (5-0) beat Kent Denver on Monday for its first win over the Sun Devils since at least 2014, per MaxPreps.

Class 2A

Top five: Crested Butte, Denver Christian, Salida, Bishop Machebeuf and Middle Park.

Notables: Brothers Shawn and Kyle Moran each have four goals for defending champ Crested Butte (4-0).

Last year’s runner-up, No. 4 Bishop Machebeuf (3-0), in the meantime, has gotten 10 goals and five assists from Luke Sri. His 25 points are only behind Dawson’s Charlie Martin (33 points) in 2A.

Below that, Brady Kindig has nine goals for No. 2 Denver Christian (4-0) and Muez Richmond has four in three games for No. 3 Salida (2-0-1).

At No. 5, Middle Park beat Sheridan, 5-1, to open the year before falling to 3A No. 3 Holy Family, 3-1, last week.
