Over 90 percent of the football teams that made the playoffs in 2019 are opting to play in the Fall this season. Under the current formats, a total of 120 teams across the state qualify for the playoffs each year and 109 of those squads from a year ago are lining up in Season A. Eleven post season members from 2019 will wait until Spring 2021 to see the gridiron again.
Class 2A has the most absentees as four teams from the 16-team bracket have plans to play in Season C. The six and eight man divisions both feature all 16 playoff teams from a year back on the gridiron with all 24 qualifiers in Class 5A joining them.
Below is a list of playoff teams from last season not competing this Fall.
CLASS 1A
- Buena Vista
- Flatirons Academy
- Manual
CLASS 2A
- Basalt
- Classical Academy
- Faith Christian
- Rifle
CLASS 3A
- Harrison
- Thomas Jefferson
CLASS 4A
- Vista Peak
The above clubs were a combined 4-10 in post-season play a year ago. Basalt went the deepest as they fell short to Delta in the 2A state semifinals. Both Faith Christian (Elizabeth) and Rifle (Englewood) won first games before suffering setbacks in the quarterfinals. The remaining teams all dropped their playoff openers.
