Rangeview remains the last undefeated big-school boys’ basketball team in the state.
LaDavian King scored 27 points in a 20-point win over Vista PEAK Prep in the opening round of the Class 6A City League Tournament on Tuesday. Freshman Marceles Duncan had 19 in a 38-point round-two victory over Northfield on Thursday.
The 6A No. 1 Raiders can finish the regular season a perfect 23-0 with a win over Denver South in the league tournament championship game on Saturday.
They have already beaten the Ravens twice this season.
In this week’s look-in on 6A-4A boys basketball, let’s dive into a few of the more meaningful games ahead of the postseason, which starts next week for 6A and 5A, and the following week for the remaining classifications.
Class 6A
No. 1 Rangeview vs. No. 13 Denver South, 2:45 p.m. Saturday at Manual High School
What’s on the line: A perfect regular season for Rangeview.
The Raiders (22-0), who are ranked 61st nationally by MaxPreps, have already locked up the top seed in the upcoming 6A postseason. And both they and the Ravens (15-7) have clinched a first-round bye.
While Rangeview aims to remain perfect, though, Denver South can improve its rankings with an upset here.
The Raiders beat the Ravens by 18 in their first meeting before winning by eight on Feb. 4.
No. 26 Legacy at No. 28 Boulder, 11 a.m. Saturday
What’s on the line: A chance to climb into the top 24 in 6A, which gets a first-round bye in the postseason.
The Lightning (13-9) and the Panthers (14-8) need a win here to have a shot at a first-round bye (seeds 1-24).
While Legacy has dropped its last two games, Boulder is about as hot as any team in the state with eight wins over its last nine games.
The Panthers beat Westminster on Tuesday to win the Rocky Mountain League title, their first league championship since 2016. They followed it up by beating Prairie View by three on Thursday for their sixth straight win.
No. 25 Overland vs. No. 22 Grandview; 1 p.m. Saturday at Mullen High School
What’s on the line: A possible first-round bye for Overland.
The Trailblazers (9-13) will have a good chance to move into the top 24 with a win against Grandview (12-10) in the Centennial League tournament’s third-place game.
Grandview won its first meeting on Feb. 5, 65-53.
Class 6A/5A
6A No. 24 Liberty at 5A No. 18 Lewis-Palmer, 2:30 p.m. Saturday
What’s on the line: Liberty trying to hold onto a first-round bye in 6A.
The Lancers (16-6) will likely need a win here to hold onto a first-round bye in the 6A classification.
Teams right behind the Lancers in the 6A standings — Overland, Legacy and Boulder — will be rooting for the Rangers (11-11), who could use a get-right win as they’ve lost their last four.
L-P could get a major emotional boost as the school will also retire former Rangers standout Josh Scott’s jersey prior to the game.
Class 5A
No. 34 Silver Creek at No. 41 Skyline; 7 p.m. Friday
What’s on the line: Skyline’s last chance to crack the postseason field.
The Falcons (8-14) are fractions of a point behind No. 40 Roosevelt (11-11) for the last spot in the 5A playoffs.
Their best bet to get in is to beat the Raptors (9-12) on Friday and have the Roughriders lose to No. 32 Thompson Valley on Saturday.
No. 13 Durango at No. 26 Grand Junction; 7 p.m. Friday
What’s on the line: The Tigers are vying to crack the top 24 to get a first-round bye.
Grand Junction (11-10) needs to pass both No. 25 Sand Creek and No. 24 Palisade to clinch a first-round bye in 5A. The Scorpions and Bulldogs have no more remaining games.
The Tigers have won their last two. They lost to Durango (13-8) by 11 on Feb. 1.
Class 4A
No. 7 Colorado Academy at No. 1 Kent Denver; 7 p.m. on Feb. 25
What’s on the line: The Sun Devils can officially clinch the top seed.
The Sun Devils (19-3) made quite the statement in an 86-44 win over No. 2 Peak to Peak on Tuesday.
Now, they have just one more hurdle left before the postseason.
They beat CA (12-8) by 31 on Feb. 4.
