Important games to league standings and post-season bracketing can be found on virtually every night of the closing week to the regular season. As a result, Colorado Preps will provide a daily preview of the top contests and how results could impact conference races and where teams are placed in post-season pairings.
There is just one conference game of note in the boys’ division tonight and it can be found in the Class 3A Confluence conference. DSST-Byers leads the conference race (5-0) by one game over DSST-Green Valley and Ridgeview Academy. DSST-Byers plays both challengers in the final week starting with DSST-Green Valley on Monday.
It’s the second meeting between the two as DSST-Byers rolled to a 73-52 decision last month. Kyrie Thomas, who leads the team in scoring at 19.9 points per game, tallied 27 in the win. Julian Beurk added a dozen. Green Valley was paced by Timothy Huston with 15 points and Luke Williams with 11.
DSST-Byers sits only 32nd in RPI standings but they played a stronger non-league schedule than most of their conference rivals. They have six losses overall by a total of 19 points including narrow decisions to Roaring Fork (5), Coal Ridge (2), Alameda (1), Golden (7), Standley Lake (2) and Pueblo Central (2).
In Class 4A, the Colorado 8 League tournament opens this evening and it’s an important eight team bracket as the winner gets the guaranteed berth to the state tournament. Conifer won the regular season crown and will be the top seed in the bracket but they must win three games this week to earn the automatic bid.
Three of the four quarterfinals are set for tonight with the higher seed hosting. Winners advance to the championship semifinals on Wednesday and winners of those battles collide for the league crown on Friday.
Games tonight include
- 7:00pm: #8 Arvada at #1 Conifer
- 7:00pm: #5 Riverdale Ridge at #4 Fort Lupton
- 7:00pm: #7 Weld Central at #2 Alameda
The fourth quarterfinal is Tuesday between #3 Skyview and #6 Englewood. That game is slated to start at 5:30pm.
