Olivia Mortensen averaged a 22.1-point, 13.8-rebound double-double last season for the girls’ basketball program at Legacy High School.
Even it comes up short to what she’s doing this winter.
Through 13 games this season, the senior is averaging the state’s fourth-most points per game (22.4) and eighth-most rebounds (13.9).
Her 130 field goals are the most in Colorado, while her 11 double-doubles ties her for fourth alongside Peak to Peak’s Alexandra Eschmeyer, who is committed to Stanford.
Her 4.8 steals per game, meanwhile, is good for second in Class 6A.
Mortensen leads the way in this week’s look-in on 6A-4A girls’ basketball, where we take a look at monster performances from across the state.
Class 6A
Mortensen, Legacy: The senior had double-doubles in each of her team’s wins last week while averaging 27 points and 13 boards.
She had a triple-double against Skyline on Jan. 13, where she tallied 20 points, 10 boards and 10 steals.
So far this year, the Lightning (8-5) have leaned heavily on their senior star.
In every major statistical category Mortensen leads Legacy — and often by a wide margin.
Get this: Second to Mortensen’s 24.7 PPG on the team is Gianna Schmidt’s 4.8. … Second to her 13.9 rebounds is Kennedy Martin’s 4.1. … Overall this season, Mortensen has scored 55% of her team’s 590 points and has grabbed 43% of its rebounds.
Sienna Betts, Grandview: The UCLA commit has 13 double-doubles in 13 games for the top-ranked Wolves (10-3).
In an overtime win over No. 6 Legend on Saturday, Betts scored 32 points on 11-of-15 shooting. She had 12 boards and four blocks.
Days before that, she had 20 points and 12 rebounds in a win over No. 10 Regis Jesuit.
On the year, Betts is averaging 23.4 points and 17.3 boards this season. She again makes Grandview one of the title favorites in 6A.
Peyton Jones, Valor Christian: Jones is on a tear this season at 24.4 PPG. And she seems to be only getting better.
Over her last four games for the No. 2 Eagles (11-2), the junior is averaging 34 points per game.
On Jan. 11, she had 45 points in a win over No. 5 Broomfield.
On Wednesday, she had 36 points on 15-of-21 shooting in a win over No. 18 Columbine. And she followed that up two days later with 25 points — shooting 11 of 16 — in a win over No. 11 Ralston Valley.
Jones is tied for the state lead in 3-pointers with 38 alongside Resurrection Christian’s Olivia Klein.
She has also been lethal from the line, where she’s 39 of 43 (91%).
Kennedy Spellman, Mountain Vista: Colorado’s scoring leader (28.1 PPG) recorded her fifth 30-point game over the weekend for No. 25 Mountain Vista (9-4).
In Friday’s win over No. 50 Heritage, she shot 15-of-27 from the field and finished with 37 points.
Class 5A
Mead: The No. 2 Mavericks (13-2) have blown out their last three opponents by an average of 42 points per game.
Behind a suffocating defense, they won by 35 against both 6A No. 15 Monarch and 5A No. 13 Frederick last week.
Only twice this season has Mead allowed 50 points to an in-state team — against Mountain Vista and the state’s scoring leader Spellman in December, then versus Legacy and Mortensen earlier this month. Both were wins.
Mullen: The third-ranked Mustangs (9-4) beat two-time defending champ Roosevelt by 21 on Thursday.
Sophomore Mackenzie Jones led the way with a season-high 23 points. She went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.
Kyla Hollier, Roosevelt: The reigning 5A player of the year had 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting in the loss to Mullen.
Surrounding it, she had 34 points on 76% shooting in a win over Severance on Jan. 14. She then scored 25 in a win over Berthoud on Friday.
The Roughriders are seventh in the 5A standings at 9-3.
Deja Burns, Sierra: The junior has 77 blocks in 11 games for the No. 29 Stallions (7-4). Her seven blocks per game is top 10 in the nation.
In two games this season, Burns has recorded a triple-double in points, rebounds and blocks.
On Friday, she had a season-low two blocks but more than made up for it with 19 points and 18 rebounds in a win over No. 59 Pueblo South.
Class 4A
Eschmeyer, Peak to Peak: She scored 31 points on 64% shooting and added 15 rebounds as the No. 8 Pumas beat Stargate School on Wednesday.
Eschmeyer is averaging 24.2 points, 13.8 rebounds and three blocks this winter. In her career, she has 1,658 points, 1,040 rebounds and 350 blocks.
Sophia Carbajal, Northridge: The sophomore was a steal away from recording a triple-double in No. 14 Northridge’s win over 5A No. 37 Mountain View on Friday.
She finished with 25 points, 16 rebounds and nine steals. She’s averaging 23.1 points and 15.5 rebounds this winter.
University: The top-ranked Bulldogs (10-0) are outscoring teams 560-265 this season.
Their lone win decided by single digits came at Peak to Peak to Peak on Dec. 17.
D’Evelyn: The No. 2 Jaguars (12-0) have beaten 11 of their 12 opponents this winter by at least 15 points.
Five of their players had at least eight points in a over 5A No. 46 Northglenn seven days ago. Ellie McMann, 4A’s assist leader (6.3 APG), flirted with a triple-double in it, totaling 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Gracie Ward, Holy Family: The junior continues to connect from deep and from the line for the No. 5 Tigers (6-4).
Tied for the 4A lead with 26 3s on the year, she’s hit 15 across her last five games. In a 10-point win over Silver Creek on Friday, she hit three 3s and scored 14 points.
At the line, she’s also been among 4A’s best as she’s 17 of 20.
