3A FOOTBALL PREVIEW – WEEK 6

Teams in Class 3A football have a ten-game regular season schedule so while other divisions get started with league play this week, clubs in this classification have one more week of non-conference play.  Many top clubs, including four of the top 10 clubs in the latest rankings, are using this week as the bye week as rest and extra preparation for the conference schedule. But we did find four games on the schedule that could…...

4A VOLLEYBALL UPDATE – WEEK 6

Tuesday is a very important night for early conference battles in Class 4A volleyball.  Longmont and Niwot face off for the first half lead in the Northern league while D’Evelyn and Evergreen do the same in the Jeffco.  The match between Battle Mountain and Steamboat Springs is a first place meeting inside the Western Slope while Pueblo West looks to extend their conference winning streak with two more matches inside the South Central. 4A VOLLEYBALL REPORT – WEEK 5

Since we are starting to see conference play across almost the entire 4A division, our report changes a bit as we will focus on league races and not be centered completely on the best five or six matches we selected at the beginning of the week. Of the most important matches we mentioned back on Sunday, four of them are set for the Tri Valley league so that’s where our report begins this week.  Holy…...

3A VOLLEYBALL – WEEK 4 REPORT

We waited until Wednesday to post our weekly 3A volleyball report since we wanted to recap several important matches from early in the week.  Several contests on Tuesday featured heavyweights from the division squaring off and facing challenges from highly ranked programs from larger classifications. #3 University began what will be strong stretch of matches by outlasting #3 Holy Family (4A) in five sets.  The Bulldogs dropped the first set but rallied to take the…...

3A FOOTBALL PREVIEW – WEEK 4

The date was Nov. 10, 2017. That’s when Erie High School had what some might call a seminal moment. Noah Roper, who was merely a walking toddler when the school first opened in 2005, ran – nay, plunged – across the goal line for a two-point conversion that catapulted the Tigers past the three-time defending Class 3A state champion Pueblo East Eagles in the first round of the playoffs. Was it the biggest win in…...

4A VOLLEYBALL UPDATE – WEEK 4

A nice mix of crucial early season conference matches and attractive non-league battles highlight the 4A volleyball schedule for the week.  And the top two teams in the division get to face off with powers from the 5A division. For #1 Lewis Palmer and #2 Ponderosa, playing the best from Class 5A is not new and both programs have been involved in such scheduling for years.  The Rangers always take on the best from the…...

5A VOLLEYBALL WEEK 3 REPORT

Okay, now we are starting to see a wider sample of volleyball results. With proof on the courts, players and programs are shakin’ out who they might be in 2018. And they are providing evidence to help support instincts about what looks good on the calendar. Here are a few matches that make me look and why.   Tuesday, September 4                             …...

4A VOLLEYBALL WEEK 3 PREVIEW

Two-time defending state champion Lewis Palmer has played just one match to date but the schedule picks up intensity this week with the Rangers playing as many as six matches before week’s end.  Up first are matches against 5A rivals Grandview and Chaparral and then the Rangers host their annual tournament on Saturday. The one match the Rangers have played, they rolled past Coronado 3-0 and dominated in almost every category.  Lewis Palmer registered 33…...

4A VOLLEYBALL WEEKLY REPORT

Until we get heavy into the conference races, our weekly report on 4A volleyball will focus on the top matchups across the state.  There are several this week including a nice matchup between #2 Holy Family and D’Evelyn and continues through Thursday when #6 Pueblo West tangles with Discovery Canyon and #7 Ponderosa is challenged by Grandview. Holy Family nearly lost a two-set lead but hung on to beat D’Evelyn 3-2 on Monday.  The Tigers…...

4A VOLLEYBALL SEASON PREVIEW

With five of their top six hitters and top setter all returning, 2018 should be another banner year for Lewis Palmer.  The Rangers have won the last two and four of the last five Class 4A state championships and are the overwhelming favorite to land another crown this November.  They enter the season as the pre-season number one team in the CHSAA rankings grabbing nine of 10 first place votes. Taylor Buckley (207 kills) and…...
