In the midst of a downpour, Air Academy sophomore Landry Frost stepped up to the first tee with a smile on her face. Her positive attitude paid dividends as she piped her drive down the par-5 first fairway, stuck her approach to about 10 feet and calmly and her eagle putt.
Frost battled through the elements just like everyone else at The Bridges and shot a 3-over-par 74 to take a one-shot lead after the first day of the Class 4A girls golf state tournament.
While the four state tournaments were all held at different courses and had different profiles, they all shared the elements.
A grey, windy day across the state hampered, but didn’t delay, the tournaments all played on as scheduled.
And in several instances, there were familiar faces at the top of the leaderboards.
Defending 5A champion Ella Scott has her Valor Christian Eagles in a prime position to win a fifth consecutive title. She shot a 1-over 73 to take the individual lead. Valor’s freshmen duo of Emma Nguyen and Chloe Johnson shot 76 and 81, respectively and are also in the top 10.
Legend is 11 shots behind Valor and Cherry Creek is 15 back of the five-time defending champions.
Frost finished the day one shot ahead of Ponderosa’s Kaylee Meyering. But Meyering, and older sister Olivia, have the Mustangs in control of the team leaderboard as they sit at 268. Both Ponderosa and Air Academy are in search of their first championship in their programs’ history.
Timnath is all over the leaderboard at Foothills.
Peyton Landon (75) leads the pack with Cheyanne Schrick (77) sitting in second place and Isla Carlucci (78). The Cubs are in a commanding lead in the team race, sitting 16 shots ahead of defending champion Holy Family.
And at 2A, St, Mary’s Academy’s Quinn Roman (76) has a one-shot lead over Manitou Springs junior Addie Dorsey. Defending state champion Sophia Lee is four shots back. Denver Christian has a seven-shot lead over Resurrection Christian for the team title.
The girls golf state champions will be crowned on Tuesday.
