It’s rare air in a season – regardless of the sport – when two matchups between programs ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the state happen on the same night.

That’s exactly what is on tap for Tuesday, April 21, though. In Class 5A, No. 1 Regis Jesuit pays a visit to No. 2 Valor Christian in a massive League #3 match up. In 4A, No. 2 Air Academy travels north to face top-ranked Lutheran in a Southern League clash between potentially unbeaten teams.

With only a little more than two weeks remaining in the regular season, those matchups may very well decide league titles and top seeding for the postseason. But there were also crucial results from last week’s slate as well.

In 5A, Lakewood moved back up to the fifth spot after a huge week that saw a 5-4 victory over previously unbeaten Ralston Valley, followed up by a 10-3 triumph over then-No. 8 Erie and a 12-3 defeat of Columbine. Eight-ranked Mountain Vista stayed in the hunt in League 3 by edging Rock Canyon and then rolling past Chaparral, with No. 1 Regis Jesuit and No. 9 Legend up next. Arapahoe has won eight in a row since a season-opening loss to Regis Jesuit, and is at the top of League 4 with Cherry Creek.

In 4A, Aspen moved up to No. 6 after topping current No. 9 Battle Mountain 9-8 on Saturday. The Skiers ran the table on the Western League, but still have six games remaining down the stretch. That includes a visit to No. 7 Telluride next Tuesday.

No. 3 Holy Family is still unbeaten at 8-0, but has a tougher schedule over the final two weeks of the season.

Here is a quick look at the upcoming top-two battles in the state’s two classifications:

Class 5A

Regis Jesuit at Valor Christian, 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 21
A showdown between the current top two ranked teams in 5A comes in a challenging stretch for the Raiders (10-0, 4-0) in League 3. Regis Jesuit took down ninth-ranked Legend by a 15-4 margin Monday, and hosts No. 8 Mountain Vista on Friday. Then comes the big league showdown with No. 2 Valor Christian (9-2, 3-0) on April 21. … The Eagles’ two losses both came to out-of-state programs, and the Eagles are coming off a 19-5 victory over Castle View on April 9 and 15-2 victory over Rock Canyon Tuesday night. Valor had 12 players score against Castle View, led by Torin LaSelle’s four goals.

Class 4A

Air Academy at Lutheran, 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 21
The second of the state’s 1-2 battles comes in Southern League play, with No. 2 Air Academy (11-0, 2-0) visiting No. 1 Lutheran (9-0, 2-0). The Kadets opened league play with a 17-0 rout of Ponderosa on April 7, followed up by 13-2 triumph over Smoky Hill. Junior Alex Sirois (38 goals, 17 assists) and sophomores EJ Hines (35 goals, 27 assists) and Chase Moody (33 goals, 22 assists) have led the offensive surge. Junior goalie Scott Cox has only allowed 33 goals over 432 minutes. … Lutheran still has to get past Ponderosa and Cheyenne Mountain this week before meeting Air Academy. The Lions notched a 7-6 victory over then-No. 6 Evergreen last Thursday, the second one-goal victory this month. Freshman Brooks Honbarrier had a goal and four assists in that win.
