The Colorado high school football season is officially underway as Week 0 games were played across the state. Below is a quick rundown of the significant moments that came out of the lighter slight of games seen this week.
Class 5A
(2) Valor Christian 36, Pine Creek 14
Cash Spence scored three touchdowns, two on offense and one on defense to get Valor a big win to open the season. Heavy rain made for a series of miscues for both teams, but new coach Mike Sanford has his first win under his belt.
(4A No. 9) Vista Ridge 24, (5A No. 5) Columbine 14
Columbine hasn’t started a season 0-1 since 2016 when they lost to Palm Bay (Fla.). The Rebels haven’t lost to a Colorado team to start their season since falling to a Mitch Johnson-led Fountain-Fort Carson team 12-7 on Oct. 22, 2014.
(3) Legend 63, Fruita Monument 10
Legend quarterback DJ Bordeaux threw for 5 touchdowns in the first half and added another on the ground as the Titans got off to a strong start to their season.
Class 4A
(2) Montrose 35, Durango 14
The Red Hawks picked up right where they left off in 2024. Elijah Womack got them on the board with a rushing touchdown in the first quarter. Liam Evans and Chase Mehan followed suit to build a quick three-score lead and Montrose never looked back.
(5) Pueblo West 17, Loveland 7
The Cyclones lost a lot from last year, but got their season off to a solid start with a win over a Loveland team that looked dangerous in last year’s playoffs.
Class 1A
CSCS 36, (7) Holyoke 19
In one of the bigger upsets across the state, the Lions took advantage of home field to get a win over a quarterfinal team from last year’s 1A quarterfinals.
8-man
(1) Haxtun 46, Melrose (N.M.) 0
In a battle of the defending 8-man champions from both Colorado and New Mexico, it was the Fightin Bulldogs getting the knockout. Melrose won last year’s meeting 44-36. it was the only loss of the season for Haxtun.
(4) McClave 16, (6) Sedgwick County 12
A top-10 battle in 8-man was everything it was cracked up to be. The Cardinals scored on a touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to take the lead and the defense forced two turnovers on downs to secure the win.
6-man
(9) Eads 84, (6) Sierra Grande 54
The Eagles got on a roll with the ground game and scored points in bunches to secure a big top-10 win.
Arickaree 57, (10) Cheraw 6
Arickaree is making a case to break into the top 10 next week as it got a blowout win over Cheraw.
