The Game of the Week was not hard to find.

It happens this week in Class 5A when ColoradoPreps.com’s No. 2-ranked Mountain Vista (5-0) entertains No. 4 Valor Christian (5-0) at 7 p.m., Friday in a huge South Metro League clash.

MV has had a stellar season, outscoring its opponents 270-24. The Golden Eagles’ offense is powered by star quarterback Austyn Modrzewski. The senior has thrown for 1,398 yards, 26 TDs with only two interceptions.

MV has six players with at least 11 receptions – led by senior Sean Conway with 16 catches for 309 yards and seven touchdowns.

Valor counters with junior QB Dawson Olk who has thrown for 1,083 yards and nine scores. Junior receiver Cash Spence leads the team with 31 receptions for 465 yards and 5 TDs. Junior RB Chase Hanosh has 392 yards rushing and five TDs.

Valor has already flexed its muscles with victories over Pine Creek (31-14) and Ralston Valley (34-17).

This game has the makings to be a classic. Let’s see what unfolds.

BELL RINGS BLUE: In 3A, Pueblo Central (4-1) was ringing the Bell Blue loud and proud after thrashing rival Pueblo Centennial (56-0) in the annual Bell Game at Dutch Clark Stadium on Sept. 27 before thousands of spectators.

The stars for Central were plenty, including senior RBs – Joseph Castro (6 carries, 103 yards, 2 TDs); and Aiden Hassoldt (3 carries, 67 yards, 2 TDs). QB Genaro Pino added 129 yards passing.

The Wildcats, who are ranked No. 6 in the latest ColoradoPreps.com poll, have the week off before visiting Canon City (Oct. 11) followed by a big clash with No. 10 Pueblo East (Oct. 18).

MESA RIDGE STUNS PALMER RIDGE: The Grizzlies have always seemed to be an afterthought when it comes to being an elite Colorado Springs football team.

That may change in 2024.

Mesa Ridge shocked perennial power and then top-ranked Palmer Ridge 31-28 last week. The star was QB Bryce Riehl. The senior was 28-for-34 passing for 319 yards and four scores. The two-way standout also added 133 yards rushing on 11 carries and another score.

For the season, Riehl has 1,105 yards passing for 14 TDs. He also has 404 yards on the ground and five TDs.

Up next for MR is rival Widefield (0-5) at noon, Saturday. The Grizzlies have moved up to No. 4 in the latest ColoradoPreps.com poll. They have a huge clash with 4A’s present top-ranked team Pueblo West at 7 p.m., Oct. 11 coming up.

Class 5A

No. 5 Legend (4-1) at No. 9 Pine Creek (3-2), 1 p.m., Saturday

Legend seized its opportunity to make a statement last week, dominating unranked Castle View (30-0).

Legend RB Ryken Banks jumped into the spotlight rushing for 180 yards on 13 carries.

Banks, a junior, and senior RB Jaden Lawrence (325 yards rushing this season and four TDs) are forming a potent 1-2 punch. Pine Creek has had a brutal schedule this season with its two losses coming against Valor Christian (31-14) and Cherry Creek (21-14).

PC QB Cameron Cooper has 798 passing for seven TDs and his favorite target is senior Elijah Roy who has 23 receptions for 293 yards.

This will be a great midseason test for both teams.

Class 4A

No. 1 Pueblo West (5-0) at Doherty (3-2), 6:30 p.m., Thursday

The Cyclones have moved up to the No. 1 spot in ColoradoPreps.com poll in 4A after Palmer Ridge stumbled against Mesa Ridge last week.

Pueblo West is a vanilla attack that keeps getting the job done. Senior QB Gavin Ray Lockett has 589 yards passing and he has thrown for six TDs. He also has rushed for a team-best 494 yards and seven TDs. Junior Zach Duran has added 390 yards rushing and two TDs.

The West defense has only allowed 35 points on the season. The Cyclones need to be careful not to overlook Doherty with a huge matchup with Mesa Ridge on the horizon on Oct. 11.

Doherty is paced by junior RB Deron Tiggett who has 504 yards rushing and six TDs.

Class 3A

No. 1 Lutheran (3-1) at No. 9 Green Mountain (2-2), 7:30 p.m., Friday

Lutheran QB Eli Abramson has been dazzling this season, throwing for 1,056 yards and 13 TDs. Also, the junior doesn’t work alone.

Running back Sawyer Wald has 563 yards rushing with seven TDs. The Lions have not played since defeating Resurrection Christian 41-0 on Sept. 20.

Green Mountain’s offense is run by QB Simon Lunsford. The senior has thrown for 436 yards and four TDs.
