As crazy as it seems, the regular season is closing fast for boys’ basketball teams in the Class 3A, 2A and 1A ranks.

In these classes, the regular season is scheduled to be completed by Feb. 28, which is just over a week away.

In 3A, the top three teams in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index are Forge Christian (20-1); Strasburg (18-2); Banning Lewis Academy (18-0); Yuma (18-2); and Peyton (16-3).

As for 2A, Simla (15-4); Sanford (18-1); Heritage Christian (14-4); Golden View Classical Academy (17-3); and Twin Peaks Classical Academy (17-3) make up the Top 5 in the Seeding Index.

The 1A Index consists of McClave (16-2); Nucla (20-0); Flatirons Academy (16-2); Cheyenne Wells (19-1) and Stratton (17-2) in the Top 5.

Unlike the top teams, this is a make-or-break week for numerous teams sitting on or around the postseason bubble.

In 3A, 2A and 1A the teams that qualify for the postseason will be placed in their respective 32-teams state brackets after the regular season. Seeds 1 through 8 will host regionals. Seeds 9-16 are true seeded except to try and avoid league matchups in the first round only.

The state tournaments in all three of these classes will conclude on March 14.

With the postseason on the front burner, here’s a sample of teams trying to qualify for the playoffs in the final stretch.

Class 3A

Denver North (7-14) at Manual (11-8), 5 p.m., Feb. 19

Denver North is a 6A squad that is sitting on the outside looking in for the postseason as it is No. 47 in the Index. Senior Brayden Thornton is Denver North’s top scorer at 13.2 ppg. Manual is in dire need of a win as it sits No. 33 in the 3A Index. The Thunderbolts have been reeling of late, losing three of their last four games, including two in a row.

Manual is led by three double-digit scorers in Zubayr Carpenter (18.8 ppg); Lee Byers (13.3 ppg) and Isaac Ebert (11.5 ppg). All three are seniors. A win against Denver North and DSST: College View at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 25 would go a long way toward getting Manual into the postseason.

Class 2A

Fowler (7-12) at Crowley County (10-8), 6:30 p.m., Feb. 19

Fowler has a storied athletic history, but none of that matters this week. The Grizzlies are clinging to a postseason bid sitting in the No. 31 spot in the 2A Index. Now, Fowler has a grand opportunity to cement itself into the playoffs with a victory against Crowley County, No. 15 in the Index.

Fowler is led by Joe Salvo (11.5 ppg); and Connor Campbell (7.7 ppg). Defeating Crowley County will be no easy task as the Chargers have won five games in a row. Fowler will have no time to rest as it concludes its regular season at 4 p.m., Friday, against a talented Peyton squad.

Class 1A

Caliche (9-10) at Akron (7-12), 4 p.m., Feb. 19

Caliche is in the postseason mix, sitting in the No. 28 spot in the 1A Index but the Buffaloes are in a downward spiral, losing four games in a row. The Buffaloes are paced by sophomore Mason Hernandez (16.9 ppg); and Ammon Adolf (10.3 ppg). Akron is No. 25 in the 2A ranks, but like Caliche, Rams are in the midst of a four-game losing streak.

Akron will try to get its season back on track by knocking off Caliche. The Rams are going to need a big game from sophomore Kolton Randel, who is averaging a team-best 18.9 ppg.
