Projecting the regional volleyball tournament pairings is a three-step process for Colorado Preps. Step one is to determine playoff qualifiers and follow criteria, we use league standings and RPI numbers to make those choices. Then step two is putting together consensus rankings to seed the teams in the bracket and then the final step to is review the bracket and make changes necessary to avoid conference pairings, head to head results and some travel concerns. Once that’s all done, we develop our regional tournament projections.
For the projections below, we true seeded based on consensus rankings and then provide some potential changes to the brackets. We tried to catch all the head-to-head results in each bracket but could have missed some here and there. Head-to-head results only come into play if teams are next to each other on the seed line.
CLASS 1A | |||
REGION 1 | #1 Briggsdale | #16 Kit Carson | #24 Sangre De Cristo |
REGION 2 | #2 Fleming | #15 McClave | #23 Rocky Mountain Lutheran |
REGION 3 | #3 Merino | #14 Genoa Hugo | #22 Cheyenne Wells |
REGION 4 | #4 Haxtun | #13 Simla | #21 Elbert |
REGION 5 | #5 Wiley | #12 Weldon Valley | #20 North Park |
REGION 6 | #6 Stratton | #11 Dove Creek | #19 La Veta |
REGION 7 | #7 Cheraw | #10 Belleview Christian | #18 Otis |
REGION 8 | #8 Idalia | #9 Flatirons Academy | #17 Springfield |
NOTES: Could see changes in seeds 18 through 21 to alleviate some travel. North Park to Wiley is a major trip so the Wildcats could exchange places with Elbert. Then Otis and La Veta could also flip-flop as trips for both clubs would then be shorter. Maybe a bigger question is how to handle Dove Creek. The Bulldogs could be bumped to 10th or 12th in the bracket as a trip to Wiley or Cheraw is much shorter than the bus ride to Stratton. Probably exchange with Weldon Valley as the Warriors drive to Stratton pairs up nicely. Simla would likely move ahead of Weldon Valley as well since the Cubs won the head-to-head contest. Same with Kit Carson and McClave in spots 15 and 16.
CLASS 2A | |||
REGION 1 | #1 Sedgwick County | #24 Olathe | #36 Custer County |
REGION 2 | #2 Meeker | #23 Lyons | #35 John Mall |
REGION 3 | #3 Fowler | #22 Sanford | #34 Rocky Ford |
REGION 4 | #4 Dayspring Christian | #21 Plateau Valley | #33 Rangely |
REGION 5 | #5 Wiggins | #20 Yuma | #32 Monte Vista |
REGION 6 | #6 Holyoke | #19 Vail Christian | #31 Heritage Christian |
REGION 7 | #7 Soroco | #18 Akron | #30 Las Animas |
REGION 8 | #8 Denver Christian | #17 Ignacio | #29 Colorado Springs School |
REGION 9 | #9 Byers | #16 Calhan | #28 Dolores |
REGION 10 | #10 West Grand | #15 Sargent | #27 Addenbrooke Academy |
REGION 11 | #11 Rye | #14 Union Colony Prep | #26 Telluride |
REGION 12 | #12 Limon | #13 Hoehne | #25 Crowley County |
NOTES: Rocky Ford and Rangely could be swapped to avoid conference pairings for each team but that creates major travel for the Panthers. So the committee could get Monte Vista involved in a three-team trade and put them #34 with Rocky Ford to #33. That leaves Rangely going to Wiggins in Region 5. We could also see Crowley County and Olathe flip-flop for travel and to keep the Chargers away from league rival Hoehne.
CLASS 3A | |||
REGION 1 | #1 Resurrection Christian | #24 North Fork | #36 DSST-Byers |
REGION 2 | #2 Lamar | #23 Pagosa Springs | #35 Bennett |
REGION 3 | #3 Lutheran | #22 Kent Denver | #34 Jefferson Academy |
REGION 4 | #4 University | #21 St Marys | #33 St Mary’s Academy |
REGION 5 | #5 Liberty Common | #20 Academy | #32 James Irwin |
REGION 6 | #6 Eaton | #19 Colorado Academy | #31 Colorado Springs Christian |
REGION 7 | #7 DSST-Montview | #18 Delta | #30 La Junta |
REGION 8 | #8 Faith Christian | #17 Montezuma Cortez | #29 Peak to Peak |
REGION 9 | #9 Valley | #16 Prospect Ridge | #28 Aspen |
REGION 10 | #10 Sterling | #15 Centauri | #27 Strasburg |
REGION 11 | #11 Platte Valley | #14 Manitou Springs | #26 Vanguard |
REGION 12 | #12 Alamosa | #13 Bayfield | #25 Lake County |
NOTES: In these pairings, we would be curious to see how the committee might handle Alamosa and Bayfield being next to each other in the seed line. Since they’re touching on the seed line, head to head results could come into play. They split two conference matchups but Bayfield is the league champion and Alamosa ended up third. Either way, one will be moved off their seed to avoid conference pairings. Another head to head factor could come into play between Eaton and Liberty Common with the Reds moving up since they beat the Eagles in conference play. Valley, Sterling and Platte Valley is also interesting. Sterling beat Valley but lost to Platte Valley and as a result those teams would likely stay in place. Elsewhere, Vanguard and Strasburg could be swapped to eliminate conference matchups in the same regional and Peak to Peak and La Junta could exchange for the same reason. Region 3 would likely be broken up as well since all three teams are from the Metro conference.
CLASS 4A | |||
REGION 1 | #1 Palmer Ridge | #24 Mullen | #36 Weld Central |
REGION 2 | #2 Cheyenne Mountain | #23 Roosevelt | #35 Northfield |
REGION 3 | #3 Thompson Valley | #22 Durango | #34 Grand Junction Central |
REGION 4 | #4 Windsor | #21 Woodland Park | #33 Glenwood Springs |
REGION 5 | #5 Frederick | #20 D’Evelyn | #32 Evergreen |
REGION 6 | #6 Erie | #19 Eagle Valley | #31 Elizabeth |
REGION 7 | #7 Niwot | #18 Holy Family | #30 Canon City |
REGION 8 | #8 Montrose | #17 Pueblo County | #29 Longmont |
REGION 9 | #9 Classical Academy | #16 Lewis Palmer | #28 Steamboat Springs |
REGION 10 | #10 Palisade | #15 Thomas Jefferson | #27 Denver North |
REGION 11 | #11 Discovery Canyon | #14 Berthoud | #26 Riverdale Ridge |
REGION 12 | #12 Falcon | #13 Mead | #25 Green Mountain |
NOTES: The committee might move Grand Junction Central out of the #34 spot since they’re in the same conference with Durango. The Warriors could move up or down one spot without an issue. Riverdale Ridge and Denver North could also exchange their places to alleviate conference pairings with Berthoud and Thomas Jefferson. Head to head, Erie could move ahead of Frederick since the Tigers beat the Warriors very early in the season. And Cheyenne Mountain also has a win over Palmer Ridge so the Red-Tailed Hawks could be moved ahead of the Bears and into the top overall position.
CLASS 5A | |||
REGION 1 | #1 Cherry Creek | #24 Rock Canyon | #36 Vista Peak |
REGION 2 | #2 Chaparral | #23 Legacy | #35 Doherty |
REGION 3 | #3 Grandview | #22 Heritage | #34 Westminster |
REGION 4 | #4 Mountain Vista | #21 Denver East | #33 Fountain Fort Carson |
REGION 5 | #5 Valor Christian | #20 Fossil Ridge | #32 Columbine |
REGION 6 | #6 Broomfield | #19 Cherokee Trail | #31 Rocky Mountain |
REGION 7 | #7 Ralston Valley | #18 Eaglecrest | #30 Monarch |
REGION 8 | #8 Highlands Ranch | #17 Liberty | #29 Arapahoe |
REGION 9 | #9 Rampart | #16 Fruita Monument | #28 Castle View |
REGION 10 | #10 Pueblo West | #15 Regis | #27 Chatfield |
REGION 11 | #11 Pine Creek | #14 Denver South | #26 Douglas County |
REGION 12 | #12 Brighton | #13 Legend | #25 Fort Collins |
NOTES: Pine Creek beat Pueblo West early in the season so the Eagles would likely jump to the 10th seed and the Cyclones dropping to 11th. That would not change the bracket that much at all. Rocky Mountain and Columbine would probably be exchanged to prevent league pairings against Broomfield and Valor Christian respectively. The rest of the bracket seems in good shape.
